I'm never coming back to the place I once knew
If I do, I'm gon' drown in the blueAs a child, Ace never knew how to read. No one had bothered to teach a feral child who hunted in the jungle and terrorized nobles how to read. Sabo had attempted to teach him and failed to get through to Ace. Ace had never bothered before. That is, until Ace met Makino. The barkeep was kind to him and let him set the pace on learning to read and write. Makino never yelled at him when he misspoke and tripped over his words. She kindly corrected him and let him try again. Makino was a godsend woman. Before Ace left on his pirate journey, he asked her to teach him manners so he could find Akagami no Shanks and thank the pirate for saving Luffy's life.
Now, Ace was grateful Makino took the time to teach him how to read. Ace spent hours studying the geography of this new world. The seas weren't as vast as the seas he sailed. The islands were bigger than his world. There was no Red Line, Grand Line, or Blues. There were different countries, even. Ishgar which had Fiore. Alakitasia which had Alvarez. Guiltana and the Eastern Continent seemed to be lesser known. The Eastern Continent reminded Ace of Wano.
'Wano...' Ace frowned again. He thought of Yamato and O-Tama. He missed his friends there. His heart became heavy as he thought of Yamato watching his vivre card burn to ashes and imagining O-Tama crying. For the umpteenth time, he cursed himself for not running as Luffy and everyone else had begged him to do. "Idiot," he mumbled to himself and put the geography book down.
The next book was much more interesting to him. The different types of magic and guilds captured his attention. More hours were spent reading, falling asleep, and waking up to read again. More than once, Porlyusica had to drag him away from the book to eat something and to change his bandages.
"Holder magic requires the mage to use an external source to produce magic through the use of the mage's magic power. Caster magic requires the user to expel magic energy from their body," Ace read out loud. "There are multiple different sub categories to magic. Ancient magic is as it seems. Spells and magic used in ancient times. This includes all Lost Magic and Black Arts as well as Memory Make, Nirvana, and Ars Magia. Lost Magic is extremely rare and was thought to be obliterated from history due to the sheer amount of power this magic held. However, there are still users of lost magic around."
Ace flipped through the pages. "Lost magic includes Slayer Magics, Arc magic, and certain other magic like the Maguilty sense." Ace frowned and read through the slayer magic types. The devil slayer magic peaked his interest. He figured it would be similar to devil fruits, but he was wrong. He flipped the page. "Caster magics include Air Magic, Take-Over Magic, Maker Magic, and any magic that doesn't require an external source. Holder magics include Celestial Spirit Magic, any summoning magic, Card and Letter Magic, and any magic that requires an external tool or source."
Ace noticed how certain magics overlapped in the different categories. Magic power and magic energy seemed very similar to Haki. Ace wondered if the Haki he had in his world could be transferred into magical energy. He made a mental note to test that theory once he was fully healed. Speaking of his wounds, with Porlyusica and Wendy's help, he would be fully healed in a week or so.
"Explain Haki to me," Porlyusica snapped, sitting in front of Ace as she redid his bandages, looking at the wound. "Your wound is healing properly. You can start doing light exercise soon." She unwrapped and quirked an eyebrow, prompting Ace to start speaking.
"Haki is the usage of your spiritual energy in various ways. There are three types," Ace held up three fingers. "Armament, Observation, and Conquerors." He tapped each finger as he listed the three types. "Armament helps you to harden your body and block a blow that would normally be deadly. Observation allows you to reach out and see things you normally can't with your usual eyesight, and Conquerors you have to be born with. It allows you to force your will on others. Only those with strong will can overcome it."
Porlyusica hummed in thought. She finished wrapping the bandages. "Sounds very similar to magic energy. You're warmer than you are supposed to be. Do you feel sick, drowsy, or overheated?" she asked him.
Ace frowned, shaking his head. "I'm fine," he replied, stretching his arms. "Sore, but fine." He had died, right? That would have meant his devil fruit would have appeared somewhere else back home. Someone else would get the Mera Mera No Mi. "I shouldn't be this hot, right? Not anymore."
"Anymore?" Porlyusica sharply raised an eyebrow. Her look demanded an answer from Ace.
"I had a devil fruit." At the woman's confused stare, Ace continued. "A devil fruit allows someone to gain powers at the cost of never being able to swim and any sea water or sea stone takes away your powers. I had the Mera Mera No Mi that allowed me to use and become fire." Ace smiled wistfully. "Naturally, I ran hotter than normal. But when someone dies, their fruit reincarnates and appears somewhere else in the world. I know I died before I woke up here. I don't have my fruit anymore. I can't feel it."
Porlyusica frowned and double checked Ace's temperature. "You run warm like Natsu usually does," she told him. "Maybe..." she trailed off, muttering to herself and walking toward the window. The shelf right under the window had a crystal ball. Ace watched the ball glow and a person's face appear in the orb. "I need you to come here," Porlyuscia demanded the person. Ace couldn't hear the response but by the way Porlyusica was smugly smiling he figured they were coming over.
Ace raised an eyebrow. "Who is coming?"
Porlyusica smirked at him. "Someone who can help."
