New rookie day! I had been recently promoted to detective so I was not a T.O. anymore but Tim, Angela and Talia had new rookies and I was so excited. I had no open cases so I went to roll call to see the fresh rookies.

I walked in and saw 3 new faces. The man on the left was young and looked familiar. The woman beside him was pretty and looked eager. Beside her was a way older man, probably older than me, and I was a bit in awe of a man that old enrolling in the academy and keeping up with it.

I sat at the desk behind Tim, Angela and Talia were late.

"What one do you want?" I asked Tim.

"Either of the young ones, it's hard enough training boots like that let alone when they are 40 odd" He said in his usual angry tone.

"You want her don't you?" I asked.

"Shut up" he said turning around to glare at me.

Angela and Talia came in and sat down giggling.

"What did you to do?" I asked leaning on my table.

"Sent a rookie to the captain" Angela said.

"That's awful! what one?" Angela pointed to the older rookie.

"Poor thing" I said remembering my rookie days. "What one is yours?"

"Don't know" she replied leaning back in the chair.

"All right, all right. Settle down. Settle down" Sergeant Grey said coming into the briefing room.

"Oh I need to talk to you guys after this" I whispered pointing to Angela and Talia.

"So, okay, we got some new blood this morning. And some pushing the expiration date" He said looking toward the older man.

"Get up. After six months together in the Academy, you've earned the right to be here. But you'll have to prove yourself to stay. The way we do things matters. Protocol and tradition are the metal from which every cop in this city is forged. Understand?" Sergeant Grey told the rookies.

All 3 replied, "Yes sir".

"Sit down. It's time to play the Training Officer match game" He said turning back to the room. I clapped my hands a little in excitement.

"Our contestants are Lucy Chen, a hotshot who made her first arrest before clocking in for work." He said pointing to the girl, I like her.

"Legacy Jackson West, who broke all his dad's records at the Academy." He said pointing to the younger man.

"And John Nolan, who was born before disco died" He finished pointing to the old man and everyone laughed.

"And the winners are: Officer Bradford, you get our hotshot. Officer Lopez, you get our legacy. Leaving Officer Bishop to ride with the 40-year-old rookie" Tim and Angela looked pleased but Talia rolled her eyes while I hid my laughter.

"Now, hear me. Today is your first day. Don't let it be your last. Forget the Academy and listen to your T.O.s. They'll teach you the way it should be done. That's it. All right. Be safe out there. Officer Bishop, I need a word with your rook" Grey finished.

"Rough draw," Tim said cockily to Talia.

"Sush Timothy," I said hitting his shoulder "Now I have some real police work to do," I said grabbing my coffee.

"Oh is that right?" Tim replied.

"Mhm it is so Angela come here," I said walking away from Tim.

"Ok, so there's a detective position opening up and word in the station is it's between you and Talia for the job."
