Book 1: Dark
Chapter 5: The Angel Coming Down the Sky
The forest seemed to feed off Kairo's fear, twisting into a nightmarish realm. Gyila's mind raced as he struggled to maintain control. "We need a plan!" he shouted to Kairo, attempting to bring focus to the dire situation. Gyila's attempts at calming down and staying sane failed. Gyila felt like he was losing his mind. Kairo had never seen this side of his brother; he had always been a goofball, and he had always been calm.
Kairo slowly began to come to his senses; his fears were what made Mona go missing. He could worry about his problems when they return to the physical world. Kairo took a deep breath and started speaking, "I have a plan, but you are not going to like it," he confessed.
"What?" asked his brother, still quite tense but also curious to hear his brother's suggestion.
"We should continue our journey; we have no idea where Mona could be. The best thing we can do right now is to just continue our mission," said Kairo, who already understood by the look on his brother's face that he didn't like his plan, just like he predicted.
"I am not giving up on her; I promised her that I would keep us safe!" Gyila exclaimed.
Kairo felt like their roles were reversed. Normally, his brother always was to say logical things, while Kairo tended to let his emotions take control of his decisions. "I know, I am sorry. But we really have no idea where she is, and we can ask Iroh and Zuko to help us find her," Kairo suggested. Seems like he finally convinced his brother.
They continued their journey in the eerie forest but slowly observed the shift in the forest. The forest gradually came to look like a normal forest: green and serene. Trees started to look tall and reassuring instead of twisted and threatening. Spirits began to show themselves.
After walking for a while, the brothers found themselves in a clearing surrounded by ancient, wise-looking trees. The atmosphere felt different here. In the center of the clearing, they spotted two men playing Pai Sho while drinking a cup of tea, the duo they had been looking for, Zuko and Iroh.
Gyila bowed respectfully, followed by his brother. "Zuko, Iroh," they started.
Two old men faced the two young men. "Hello, young Avatar, hello Gyila. It is a pleasure to see you again," said Iroh with a big warm smile. Both Gyila and Kairo have encountered them in their previous trips to the spirit world.
Before Zuko could ask them what brought them here, Gyila impatiently asked them, "We have lost our friend, a girl named Mona. Can you please help us find her?" he asked. The desperation in his voice put a frown on everyone's face. Kairo also wanted to find their new friend, but it seemed as if Gyila cared for Mona in a much different way than Kairo did.
Zuko furrowed his brow, concern across his features. "Lost? We did not sense anything amiss for weeks. Where did you last see her?"
Kairo explained the events that led to Mona's disappearance and why they came to the spirit world.
"I'm afraid we do not know Mona's whereabouts," Iroh admitted a hint of regret in his voice. "The spirit world can be unpredictable, but I am sensing that she is not in danger, Gyila."
Gyila's frustration boiled over, and he clenched his fists. "We can't just leave her lost in the spirit world! I promised her that I would keep us safe!" Gyila looked like he was about to cry. Kairo now understood; he couldn't believe he didn't realize it sooner; his brother had a crush.
