"Damn. They're at season 5 already? Time sure flies." You let out a sigh as you scrolled through your phone.
Your name is [y/n]. Currently, you are obsessively scrolling through your social media. There's nothing incredibly special or noteworthy about you. You wear the same casual clothes most people would pick when they're going out. You attend college and survive through a tedious part time at some fast food branch, like many other students would. There isn't really any part of you that you'd consider particularly eye-catching. But honestly? That's probably a good thing.
As if your phone agrees to this, you find yourself coming across yet another negative post harshly criticizing an innocent content creator. It's trending as we speak.
The algorithm is a bit too on point sometimes.
Today you decided to check out that new mall that had just opened up recently. You were feeling a little adventurous that day and hoped to find something fun. To your disappointment, since the building had just been newly completed, a vast majority of the stores were still closed and still under construction. You could tell that the mall definitely has plans to become something big though. In fact, some of the walls have been plastered with posters of an indoor amusement and arcade in the making. The poster itself was poorly printed on cheap tarp with no actual date mentioned anywhere but it did claim it was "coming soon!". It might be something worth coming back for.
That's when you saw it. There, in the distance, across the hall was a bookstore. Did you really need time to think twice? You're making your way there in an instant, stuffing your phone back into your pocket. Finally, something worth seeing.
It was a quaint little bookstore attempting to mimic an antique aesthetic. It had a chalkboard sign at the front with today's recommended book, along with a personal review that likely came from the staff themselves. Through the display glass, hanging lanterns could be seen illuminating those rows and rows of rich and bountiful literature with a soft yellow glow. The ones at the very front were all either hardbound or leather-bound, the best kind. It gets even better inside. One step through that door and you get that woody, vanilla-like smell of fresh, new books. Very few customers were roaming around so it wasn't crowded either. They even had one of those sliding ladders. However, a note attached to it stated that the ladder was for employees only.
That's alright. You may have lost the option to glide around the room like a bibliophile maiden in Paris, but that's not the only reason why you're there.
The books, [y/n]! The books!
You're not quite sure what you should be going for. Did you even come here expecting to buy something? An employee even noticed you perusing their vast selection and kindly asked if you were looking for a specific title. You really weren't. You came here with no game plan and now you're paying for your hubris. Now you have to live through an embarrassing and awkward conversation with that eager employee and tell them that you were just looking around.
Great, now you HAVE to buy a book or else you'll feel bad.
That's when you recalled the post that had graciously landed in your recommended feed earlier. The one you definitely didn't just glance over for a few seconds before scrolling past and forgetting it entirely.
No, not the one about the content creator drama. Geez. Did you forget already?
Bungou Stray Dogs was on its 5th season.
Truth be told, you had actually stopped keeping up with the series after the 3rd season was released. It wasn't that you didn't like the show. In fact, you were an avid fan who had read both the light novels and manga along with it. Life just got busy. You had your family to deal with, high school, and entrance exams to worry about back then. It led you to lose track and forget about a lot of shows and series you were previously very fond of.
That aside, every neuron in your brain activated and you recalled how the show was based on classical authors. All of a sudden, you had a long list of books that you wanted to purchase. No, aside from their names, you didn't know single thing about any of these authors nor their works. But that didn't matter. You were motivated to see what your favorite characters were based on. Already, you're stacking familiar titles into your arms.
Which... you then had to return a few because you realized neither your wallet nor your feeble limbs could withstand your shopping spree. You decided to settle with two titles that caught your fancy. _____ and _____.
"You have good tastes"
You felt like an absolute genius when the lady at the counter looked at your final choices and gave a nod of approval. You'll have to thank your beloved anime later and catch up with the manga as soon as you get home. After paying for those books, you pull out your phone as you make your way to the exit. You're trying to search up that old site you once used to read all the previous chapters years ago but for some reason, the site is taking an awfully long time to load.
"MOVE!" A young boy with short black hair yells at you before roughly shoving you out of the way.
Your heart sinks as your fall onto your butt. Before you could even say a word, he was already miles away. You were just barely able to recognize his Japanese uniform.
"huh. A cosplayer?" You asked yourself. You don't see foreigners like that very often. But that didn't make much sense. Was there a convention nearby?
That's when you finally noticed it. The outside of the bookstore was abnormally crowded for a mall that was recently deserted. And to your surprise, they're all Japanese. In fact, you're not even indoors.
The street up ahead was littered with cars. Various shops lined the streets. A lot of bars too. You look back at the shop you had just existed from and it looked completely different from when you had first entered it. Now, that antique little bookstore was a simple bakery selling freshly-baked snacks. You check out your reflection on the glass. You look much younger. You actually look like your 15-year-old self.
Your eyes widen both in horror and confusion. You pinched at your cheeks with both hands and pulled as hard as you could, hoping maybe the pain would snap you out of this bizarre dream.
But nothing happens.
"...Well, crap. I had an essay due tomorrow and I haven't even started on it."
