CHAPTER THIRTEEN

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

Daisy Jane stood at the hanging tree, patiently waiting for the arrival of Coriolanus Snow. She's been standing underneath the tree for fifteen minutes now, and she honestly thought he would've been at the hanging tree by now.

She ended up telling Lucy Gray and the others that she was leaving. She would've felt extremely bad if she just left without saying goodbye to either of them.

The sound of footsteps made her step out from behind the tree, revealing herself to Coriolanus, who didn't miss how annoyed she was.

"I'm sorry." He quickly apologized. "It was difficult getting here. People are starting to wake up."

"Which is why we need to leave now." Daisy Jane said, grabbing his hand and pulling him away from the hanging tree.

Coriolanus looked down and that's when he noticed his mother's scarf wrapped around her. He couldn't stop the small smile from forming on his face.

The pair didn't take much as they walked through the woods. Daisy was humming quietly, keeping her gaze on her feet to make sure she doesn't trip over a branch. Coriolanus just walked beside her, listening to her hum beautifully. It was a relaxing noise, and he never wanted it to stop.

Daisy eventually stopped humming, and they were back walking in pure silence. Coriolanus pushed a large tree branch out of the way so it wouldn't hit her in the face.

"Are you thinking about Sejanus?" She asked, breaking the silence between them.

"I just wish there's more I could have done." Coriolanus replied, pushing another branch out of the way. "I'm sorry you have to leave this place."

"I'll miss the Covey." She said. "I hope they'll follow me someday."

He nudged her arm. "You know what I won't miss? People."

She playfully rolled her eyes, cracking a smile. "People aren't so bad. It's what the world does to them. Like all of us in the arena. I think there's a natural goodness born into us all. You can either cross that line into evil or not. It's our last work to stay on the right side of that line."

Coriolanus stopped walking as she continued to walk. "It's not always that simple."

"I know. I'm a victor." She replied. "It sure will be nice to not kill anyone else up north though."

"Three's enough for me."

Daisy Jane froze.

"I'm gonna make a walking stick. You want one?" He asked her.

"You killed three?" She asked, ignoring his question. She turned around to face him, seeing he was sticking his thumb in his mouth. "Who's the third?"

"What?"

"The person you killed, Coriolanus. You said you killed three people. I only know about two. Do not lie to me." Daisy Jane snapped, growing irritated.

He walked up to her, holding his thumb up to her face. "Can you help me with this?"

"Why are you ignoring the question?"
