"May I sit?" she asked Romeo as she arrived at their table.
"Most certainly, my lady." Romeo even stood and pulled out a seat for her, ever the gentleman. She flushed slightly, aware of all the other eyes on her.
[...]
"I see Finch and his girl are talking again."
"Who?" Romeo craned his neck to face the other table. "Ah, him and Lane? They're technically not together yet, but it's only about time." Jojo and Crutchie nodded in agreement.
"So, why was she elsewhere yesterday?"
Romeo shrugged a little. "She's just kinda odd. Doesn't really like talking about herself much." He laughed. "Finch was always into the more mysterious types."
Amy frowned as she turned to face the other table, where Finch and Lane sat across from each other. Their interactions weren't lengthy, but Amy noticed how Lane's eyes were trained on Finch, even when he faced away.
"So, that's the girl who likes to read," noted Amy. "Finch told me he was reading a book she liked."
At that, the entire group with whom she sat began to chuckle. This consisted of Romeo, Jojo and Crutchie, of course, as well as Tommy Boy, Buttons, Sniper, Mike, Ike and Elmer. It was as though she had just uncovered an inside joke that she was very much not in on.
Amy frowned. "Why's that funny?"
Mike smiled, shaking his head. "We've been trying to get them to admit their feelings through the books."
She was intrigued. "How so?"
"Well, take the book he's reading now," said Elmer. "Inside, I wrote a note that suggested that he and Lane were similar to the main character and the love interest in the novel."
"You've read it?"
"Well, no, but Google can get you a long way." That much, Amy knew, was true. "Plus, the blurb told me pretty much everything I needed to know."
Amy smiled. "Lane hasn't caught on, I take it."
"Oh, absolutely not." Jojo snorted. "She's pretty cool, but she's as oblivious as a rock."
Amy wasn't sure how a rock could be oblivious, especially considering that there were a great many things that rocks could simply not do, as they were not sentient... obviously. Sayings had always seemed quite silly to her, but she liked looking up their origin. She noticed that she was spacing out, so she hurriedly returned her attention to the conversation, listening as Jojo continued.
"I think she tries to pretend that we don't really care about her, and she doesn't really care about us," he said quietly, a sad look on his face. "Other than with Albert, anyway. So that kind of complicates things, too."
Romeo nudged her slightly. "That's why it's up to us to play matchmaker."
"I can see why they call you Romeo," Amy replied jokingly. But in truth, the name suited him perfectly.
[ SCENE WITH AMY, LAURA AND WILLIAM ]
Laura tells Amy to stay away from Romeo, only for Laura to announce that they're dating shortly after. Amy is HEARTBROKEN
The girl seated next to her turned to her, concerned. "Were you crying? What happened?"
"I'm okay," Amy replied quietly. "Well... I was before my day was ruined by some... something." What she'd wanted to say was that it had been ruined, more specifically, by some Jolene wannabe, but Amy had always prided herself on being charitable. Plus, the teenage mind was quick to assume when it came to other people. She didn't want any rumours circulating about herself. She knew first hand how quickly they could spread.
