The Witch

When I gathered the courage to pry open my curtains, nothing was there. Not even the sulfuric scent was present.

I let out a breath, the worry leaving my body with it.

I was prone to dreams. I've had them since I was little. Most were silly things like getting chased by a wild turkey or talking to my crushes. But some were not so silly.

And those dreams had always made me look over my shoulder. They had my parents concerned too. So much so that they had me talk with the coven priestess about them.

It wasn't the nature of the dreams that had them worried. It was how they seemed to foretell the future. That kind of power could not be given by any spell or potion. Much like my home, it had to be passed down.

The thing that really made everyone question my abilities was that there were no records of any past relatives of having the power of Prophets. These sorts of things don't just appear out of thin air. There had to be something to trace somewhere.

And yet there was nothing.

I scanned my yard once more, checking for shadows in broad daylight. Since the coast was clear, I deemed it safe to head into my garden for the morning.

The crisp autumn air eased more tension from my body. Relaxing my shoulders, I start pulling the few weeds that had popped up and watering my mothers old herbs.

Honey bees liked to buzz around her lavender plant. Some would land softly on my hands as I worked. I didn't mind. They kept me company during this somber time.

It felt like a memorial each time I tended her garden.

Once I finished the herbs, I moved over to the other side where I had planted all my fall and winter vegetables. Squashes and parsnips and some chard. I had plans to make the most delicious soups this season.

Not even Hell itself would stop me from getting my beloved soups.

I let my mind wander as I watered my vegetables. It wasn't until I noticed someone standing outside my gate that I returned to my place on this earth. I look up quickly, trying to hide the fear from last night.

But there was nothing to be afraid of in broad daylight.

It was James. My once boyfriend had returned home from his huge law firm gig in the big apple. I blinked.

"Hi, Cory," he said softly, his smile was just as I had remembered it. "Long time no see."

It took a moment for me to process his presence. But once I did, I dropped my hose and threw open the garden gate. I all but leaped into his arms.

"James," I squeal. "I missed you so much! How's the job? You have to tell me everything!"

"Ok! Ok," he laughed. "Geeze. I swear I'll give you all the details, but first I was thinking we could grab a coffee. My treat."
