"Professor?" Gladion asks.
"I didn't expect you here."
"You here to congratulate us?" Sophocles asks, a mischievous smile on his face.
He holds up a trophy. Kukui blinks. "Oh. Congrats, guys! But I actually came over because I saw what happened to Ash."
Ash blinks up at him, the first he's contributed to the conversation. That in and of itself is enough to show Ash is not fully cognizant of what's going on.
"Huh?" he asks.
"What happened to me? I'm fine, Professor. No need to worry."
Kukui raises his eyebrows but doesn't deign that worthy of an answer."What first aid did Ash get?" He asks Gladion. Gladion shakes his head. "They gave us an ice pack, after it was all over. Ash's head was still hurting."
"That's it?" Kukui responds. "An ice pack? After an injury like that?"
"What do you mean?" Sophocles asks. "Shouldn't that be enough?"
"Not if he has a concussion!"
Gladion furrows his eyebrows. "You think Ash has a concussion?"
As he asks this, Ash slides a little further down the wall. Gladion wordlessly puts Ash's arm around his neck and slides him back up before letting him go.
The way he does it suggests to Kukui that this has happened a few times now.
Yeah, Ash definitely has a concussion. He voices as much to Gladion. "They should have done way more. After getting hit straight in the face? After getting knocked out?"
Ash pipes up again. "Gettin' knocked out isn't all that bad," he says. "That always happens when you get hurt."
Kukui blinks slowly, and then stares long and hard at Ash.This kid is going to give him a heart attack. "No," he says, dragging it out. "No, Ash, it doesn't. Does that always happen to you?"
Ash slides an inch or two down the wall. "Not always, but, like, sometimes. When you hit your head too hard. Like now. I'll be fine once I - uh, once I get a good night's sleep.""Don't do that," Kukui says, quickly. "Sleeping is a no-no right now. Come on, at least let me check to be sure."
He eases Ash onto the ground, and then Gladion and Sophocles join them. Kukui can feel the anxiety radiating off of them.
"Don't worry," he reassures them. "Ash will be fine, as long as we take care of that injury."
"Does he need to go to the hospital?" Sophocles asks, his voice pressured.
He should, Kukui thinks, but he's putting a pretty likely bet on the fact that Ash won't go unless they pull him kicking and screaming, and no one wants that."We'll see," he settles on.
He turns on the flashlight on his phone, shining it into Ash's eyes. "Ow," he complains, loudly. "What'd you do that for?"
More irritable than usual, Kukui checks in his head. Also, he's seen Ash shine a flashlight into his eyes for fun before, so he has increased sensitivity to light, too.
Don't do that, he always tells him. Do you want to damage your eyes?
Ash always tells him it looks like a kaleidoscope. So Kukui bought him a kaleidoscope."Ash, I need you to keep your eyes open."
Ash grumbles and keeps looking away. "Ash," Gladion says. "Listen to the professor."
Pikachu says something, too, and Ash grumbles again but relents. His pupils are the same size, which is good, but he's still clearly a bit out of it.
So Kukui turns the flashlight to the actual bump at his hairline, which is clearly inflamed but not bleeding, which is good. He touches it lightly, and Ash pulls away. Kukui nods to himself, turning the light off.
