Season 3/Chapter 9: No Other Choice

Start from the beginning

Y/n: Are you excited to be leaving soon?

Clementine: As excited as anyone can be, I guess. Not going to lie, though. I wish we had a safe place to stay where we weren't looking over our shoulders every minute of the day wondering if something's going to jump out at us.

I nod.

Y/n: I get it. I think we'll find something out there, maybe. A place just for us.

Clementine: And if we don't?

Y/n: Then I'll make it.

Clementine: (Grins) I like the sound of it. Just you and me, a little cabin, maybe like a pond or something. Sounds pretty cool. Like the house a princess in an old Disney movie would have.

I give Clem a small peck on the cheek.

Y/n: Well then you can consider it done. Only the best for you.

Clementine: (Chuckles) Thanks.

I step over a branch and listen to the others talk. Tripp and Javier are behind us with Tripp talking about something stupid or whatever until he brings up Kate who appears to be in a relationship with Javier while being married to David. Talk about Awkward. That's why I am pretty happy I was a kid when everything fell, so I could avoid stuff like that. Makes life easier.

Tripp: I gotta tell you, man. I thought you and Kate were... you know. I mean I saw you kiss her in the junkyard. And, uh... I ain't judging, mind you, I'm just curious. What's the story. Ain't my business, I know, but what have we got to lose out here?

There's a slight pause and I almost want to burst out laughing at the awkwardness of it all. God knows the one thing that hasn't changed over the course of the apocalypse is how awkward it is to ask about people's love lives. Even if they're your friends.

Javier: I...

Tripp: Hey, man, it's alright. Go for it.

Javier: I do have feelings for her. Maybe I shouldn't, but that doesn't just make them go away.

Tripp: No harm in saying it. Hell, the only real harm's in not saying it when you should. It's always a mess, ain't it?

Javier: What's that?

Tripp: Who you love, who loves you. If they're one and the same or otherwise. You know what I mean? Just when you think you got everything figured out. Boom! Heart goes ass-over-teakettle.

I nod to that.

Y/n: You're not wrong, big man. Love is a complicated thing.

Javier: If it wasn't messy, it wouldn't be important, right?

Tripp: Maybe.

When Javier speaks again, I can hear a bit of hesitation in his voice. And I can hear the same when Tripp speaks following him. It's clear that these two aren't guru's in love like I am, but some people just aren't born with my gifts.

Javier: Yeah, maybe.

Tripp: Just saying, man, three things that never hide forever... The sun, the moon, and the truth. I know Eleanor told you that she and I were whatever we were. But that's over now. I respect her wishes. I really do. I just wish my heart respected mine...

I look back at Tripp.

Y/n: Well Thor Burger-Bun, I think you should really tell Eleanor how you feel before it's too late whenever you get the chance. See, I've already got the person I'll be with for the rest of my days, but you two are still pining for yours.

Tripp: Already went down that lane, Kid. It... didn't work out.

Y/n: So what it didn't work out the first time. Who cares? The important thing is that you love each other and try fixing what didn't work. If this time it doesn't work, then you know it's not meant to be.
