Kat
I get off the plane and make my way to the arrivals. Since I'm only staying one night, I have very little luggage. JD hasn't messaged me. So I scan the crowd of waiting people. It doesn't take long before I spot him.
"Flight ok?" he asks as we move towards the taxis.
"It was fine. I splurged and got first class." I grin at him to rub it in that he had to sit on a sweaty bus while I got a big comfy seat.
"I swear dad spoils you."
"Like he didn't pay for all of your hockey equipment."
"That's different."
"Uh uh. Well, I'm not the one who wanted to come here, so." I shrug.
"Come on. Let's get to the hotel. I suppose you also upgraded your room to a suite?"
I place the bag in the trunk and get in the car. "No, but maybe I should have."
He rolls his eyes and I smile. As the taxi takes us to the hotel where we're both staying, I watch the cityscape, still not sure coming here was a good idea. Errant thoughts of my grandma intrude on my determination to just try to relax.
"I have to get to the warm-ups soon," JD says when he grabs my bag from the trunk.
"You don't have to babysit me." I take my bag. "I have shopping to do, remember?"
"Just get checked in so I know you're all set. Mom's been bugging me all day."
As soon as I have my keycard, he snaps a picture of me holding it up and smiling so he can show mom the proof. Mom loves to get photos of us. I'm fairly certain she saves them all into different folders, even when it's just a blurry text book to let her know I'm studying, or a picture of me drinking coffee as I head to class.
"Your duties are fulfilled," I say and head for the elevator. I spot a bar next to the lobby. It looks cozy and inviting.
JD checks his phone and I can see the aggravation at the reply he must have gotten. "She wants a photo of us having dinner after the game."
"Sure. Just let me know where and when."
"So you're really not coming to the game?" He almost sounds surprised as I step into the elevator.
"Have you ever known me to willingly attend a hockey game?"
"I guess not."
"JD," someone shouts from across the foyer and I give him a small wave just as the doors close.
After dumping my bag and bringing up the address of the store my mom insisted I visit, I grab another taxi.
I line up a selfie with the store in the background and send it to my mom. I'm sure she has a folder for just such an occasion.
It's not a bad store and I do find a few things I like. I snap a few more photos and send to Morgan. It takes a while before she replies, letting me know she just finished her study group and is loving the fashion show.
I ask her opinion on a couple of dresses and leave the store with three dresses and a few accessories. It's a good thing I left my suitcase fairly empty.
I walk to the store Morgan recommended, and it is completely different. I'm barely in the door before I text her.
I can't shop here.
Why not?
All of this stuff is so... out there.
