Y/N was a prodigy. She was the smartest and most skilled student in all of Foxfire. But she never let that get to her head, because she always had a constant reminder lingering in her mind that humbled her.
Y/N was a Talentless.
And she was a level seven at Foxfire.
There was nothing wrong with being a level seven talentless, especially with her skills and smarts... at least that's what Y/N's parents told her. But in Y/N's eyes, there was a huge problem. And that problem had a name:
Sofie Foster.
Ever since Sophie had begun attending Foxfire, Y/N's best friends, Keefe and Fitz, had ditched her. While she knew it wasn't intentional and they didn't mean to hurt her feelings like that, Fitz and Keefe had also been Y/N's protection from the many bullies at Foxfire who were ready to tear her apart because she was a talentless member of the nobility. But now that they were running around with the newest prodigy in the school, a talented prodigy, Y/N was fair game.
One day, Y/N was walking down the hall to get to her Alchemy class when she heard her name ring out across the hallway.
"Y/N!" It said tauntingly.
She turned to see none other than Stina Heks walking her way. Stina was only a level four at Foxfire, but she acted as if she ruled the place. Plus, Stina was known for her dislike of talentless nobility (which came from her parents, no doubt).
Y/N rolled her eyes. "Go away, Stina. I'm going to be late."
Stina snorted. "What does it matter? You're talentless. You won't need these classes because you'll end up in a dead-end job, like working at a non-accredited Apothecary like the Dizznees," she gasped. "Oh! Wouldn't that be fun! Y/N and Dex Dizznee getting married and running that dump as husband and wife! Ha!"
Y/N felt tears prick her deep blue eyes. "Shut up, Stina, there's nothing wrong with that. It's better than ending up alone because no one can stand to be with you."
Stina's expression darkened. "You watch your mouth. My family can have you expelled from here in a second, and I won't hesitate to-"
"Leave her alone!" none other than Dex Dizznee exclaimed, approaching Y/N. "Get a life, Stina, this is pathetic!"
Stina snarled. "Well well well, if it isn't Dexter Dizznee. Come to protect your girlfriend, have you?"
Dex turned bright red. "Y/N is not my girlfriend. She's too smart for that," he muttered embarrassedly.
Stina smirked in satisfaction as she turned on her heel and strutted away.
Dex sat down on a bench in the hallway and looked up at Y/N, who had sat next to him. "Aren't you going to be late to class?" he asked.
Y/N smiled softly. "Aren't you normally hanging out with the Foster crew?"
Dex chuckled a bit. "As much as I hate to sound desperate, Keefe and Fitz are hogging her. I just feel like I don't fit in with them sometimes. I mean, they are all amazing and unique and special... and I'm just Dex."
"At least you aren't a talentless freak," Y/N pointed out. Dex hung his head and stared at his shoes. "Hey..." she continued, gently rubbing his shoulder. "I didn't mean anything by it. Your parents run a respectable business, and your father has proved multiple times that you don't need a special ability to be, well, special."
"Yeah." Dex wiped away a stray tear.
Y/N thought for a moment. "You know..." she finally spoke, "Stina's idea of you and I getting together, it's not bad."
This caught Dex off guard and he looked at Y/N, shocked.
She laughed. "I know, I know, that sounded crazy. But think about it. Not only would it catch Stina completely off guard, it would be fun, I think. And if things don't work out between us, I promise we can stay friends."
Dex shook his head. "I've watched you- not in a creepy way!" he added nervously. "And what I've noticed is that you are way too good for me. I mean, look at you! You're smart, skilled, and absolutely stunning with the prettiest blue eyes I've ever seen-"
"Do you really mean that?" Y/N asked, touched by his kind words.
"Of course!" Dex exclaimed. "You are the only girl Keefe and Fitz talk about other than Sophie and Biana, because they know how amazing you are, just like I do. And they know that I couldn't even compare to you."
"Stop undermining yourself, Dex!" Y/N rolled her eyes in exasperation. "That is not how you get a girlfriend! Now, do you want to do this with me or will I have to find another cute strawberry-blonde kid to save me from Stina's wrath?"
Dex looked up and down the hallways. "That may be hard, considering I'm one of the only strawberry-blonde kids in the school."
Y/N smirked. "Is that a yes?"
Dex nodded. Y/N leaned in and kissed his cheek, and he gasped. "Thank you, Dex Dizznee. Now, I really should be going, Lady Galvin will whup my ass if I'm late, which, I am."
As Y/N got up to leave, Dex grabbed her wrist. "Wait! What if we aren't on each other's Match Lists when we get them?"
Y/N giggled. "One problem at a time! We'll cross that bridge if we get to it."
Before he could respond, Y/N planted a kiss on his lips, then sprinted down the hall to Lady Galvin's classroom, leaving a starstruck Dex behind.
