Request – A Part Two of - Anything with Tate! but maybe he brings home his girlfriend to meet the family! hope that you are doing well! – But when the Reader meets the Duttons

You were sitting in Kayce's truck. It was almost nine o'clock by now and you had still yet to eat anything. But that's not what was bothering you.

What was bothering you, was the fact your boyfriend had tried to introduce you to his family, and it had gone anything but perfect. Through no fault of yours, this probably was the single worst night you had experienced as an outsider to something.

While no one threw anything at you, swung at you, or made a rude comment at you...it was still a difficult evening to witness. It had ended for you about twenty minutes ago when Kayce had had enough of everything and snapped at you to go get in his truck.

Well, technically it was "Go get in my fucking truck, Y/N!"

You were getting a bit worried though because Kayce had yet to emerge from the house. It was pitch black as far as your eye could see out looking toward the land. You remembered the majestic sight when you had arrived a few hours earlier. It took your breath away. But that was the last thing that awed you this evening.

Kayce had warned you plenty about his family. While they all valued loyalty, that's about where it stopped with similarities.

You had met his father, John first. On the front porch, John extended his hand to you and welcomed you. It had started off just fine, with simple pleasantries and you even made John laugh with your charm. Kayce was stiff next to you, but you chalked that up to any son whose father was meeting their girlfriend.

You had made the comment about almost being done with school. You were going to be a teacher at the local high school next fall. John said something about Kayce learning a thing from you about commitment to a career. You hadn't liked how John said it but what you didn't like more was that Kayce acting like it was okay for his father to say something like that.

When you defended Kayce, saying his military background made him pretty dependable, John laughed at you. You felt Kayce touch the small of your back when you went to argue. After looking up at him you saw him shake his head for you to drop it.

Walking inside the home, you met Kayce's older brother next. Jamie was a politician through and through. He looked and acted the complete opposite of Kayce, but there was a kindness underneath it.

But Jamie said something to his father that sent John into an angry spiral. He spat at Jamie, saying things like he should have handled it and now John would have to clean up his mess again. Kayce steered you out of the entry and into the kitchen.

You met Beth there.

She eyed you up and down and you were immediately intimidated by her. Then she opened her mouth and asked how long you had "been fucking my brother?" and if you "just wanted money this wasn't the place for it."

When you had tried to defend yourself, Beth had already moved on to asking Kayce who their father was yelling at.

It didn't get better after that.

Eventually, you all were around the dining table, but Jamie said something which caused Beth to throw her whiskey glass at his head. It escalated with Kayce yelling at Beth, John yelling at Kayce, and Jamie running away before Kayce snapped at you to get back to his truck.

So, here you were waiting.

The front door finally opened, and you saw Kayce walk out and over to where you were sitting in the passenger seat with the door open. You leaned up as he stopped in front of you, but it was then you saw his eyes.

He looked like he was a young boy. He looked so sad and vulnerable that you simply forgot everything that you had just witnessed and slid from the seat, wrapping him in your arms.

"I'm so sorry," Kayce whispered to you. "I should have never brought you here."

"Hush," You squeezed him tightly. "Don't apologize for family...that's not your fault."

"This is why it's taken me so long to bring you out here," Kayce sighed.

"Here I thought it was because you're embarrassed by me," You tried joking with him, but Kayce didn't laugh.

"Never," Kayce leaned back to look down at you. "I'm sorry."

"Everyone has family issues," You shrugged, your arms still around him. "I'm sorry though...I know that wasn't easy for you in there."

"Are you...are you really apologizing to me on behalf of my own family?" Kayce asked you.

"I'm saying that you don't need to worry about me judging you based on the actions of others," You smiled up at him.

"Are you real?" Kayce's eyes softened at you.

You reached one hand back and cupped his cheek, his beard a bit rough under your thumb.

"I've got an uncle who always gets so drunk at events that he's got his own cell down at county," You whispered softly. "My sister thinks her life is perfect and I should have the same...and she constantly reminds me about it."

Kayce blinked, listening to you.

"I'm the black sheep because I actually went to school," You shrugged. "And my grandfather died in prison for shooting his best friend twenty years ago over cattle...fucking cattle."

Kayce snorted.

"We all have our family issues," You smiled up at him. "Just as long as we learn from them and don't become them...we'll be okay."

Kayce leaned down and captured your lips in a warm kiss. You kissed him back, feeling him press you against the side of his truck as one of his hands tangled in your hair.

"Thank you," Kayce murmured against your lips.

"I love you," You smiled.

"Love you," Kayce kissed you again.

John clears his throat making the two of you pull a part.

"Y/N?" John looked at you.

You felt Kayce's hands drop to your waist, protectively.

"I want to apologize to you," John sniffed. "I'd like to say that's not who we are in there...but something tells me you wouldn't believe me anyway."

"Well, I was just telling Kayce that every family has their issues," You nodded.

"That they do," John nodded. "If you'd-uh...be okay, I'd like to offer you back in there for dessert. Beth and Jamie are in their rooms, but the three of us could...if you'd like."

You looked up at Kayce who looked wary of his father's invitation. But ultimately, he was going to let you decide.

"On one condition," You stepped forward. "I don't want to hear you talk to or about Kayce in a negative way in front of me again."

John stared back at you.

"I'm here because I love your son, John," You continued. "And only because I am your guest...did I not punch you earlier."

John snorted and looked over at Kayce.

"I think she just might last, son," John turned back around and walked to the house.

You looked over at Kayce who had a new look across his face.

"What?" You asked him.

"Just never seen anyone threaten my father and have him walk away," Kayce smirked.

"Times are changing, Dutton," You winked at him. "Let's go see about this dessert."

Kayce laced his fingers through yours and you both walked back into the house.
