WAS PEACE ALWAYS THIS PEACEFUL? or was she just in heaven?

wait, never mind.

this was not heaven. or maybe it was, either way, she couldn't tell. all audrey could see for miles was white. it enveloped her like a soft warm blanket.

the feeling was so surreal, nothing less and nothing more than peace.

that was until the white began to flash and she started to panic. memories flickered through her head at the speed of light, forcing her to remember everything. her last moments, mila's death, peters death.

and then the flashing stopped and it was darkness.

it lasted for so long audrey couldn't tell whether or not her eyes were closed, and if they were how to open them.

had it been hours? months? years even? or maybe time didn't exist here. eventually, she had laid down, constantly shifting to find a comfortable position.

and then she was falling, deep deep down.

the brunette screamed, flipping her arms and legs.

"OOF!" she landed with a loud thud, body banging down onto the ground. the room was tiny yet cozy. a small living room, she realized.

gasps emerged from whoever had been watching the scene, and suddenly audrey couldn't feel anything but a tiny body attacking hers.

it was familiar, one she hadn't felt in a while. so strikingly familiar that the woman was genuinely terrified to look down, to glance at the little munchkin attacking her with hugs.

and yet she tilted her head down and peeked through one eye, instantly smiling at what she saw.

dark brown locks, a toothy grin, and doe eyes that stared up at her.

"gosh freaking damnit." she cursed to herself, hugging the small girl closer to herself.

"i missed you," mila stared up at her, eyes wide and filling with tears.

"i miss you too baby." 014 heaved through small sobs, holding the child's face in her hands.

"you're here now, right?" audrey looked away at the question, unsure what would happen to her. was this permanent? would she see peter again? "right mama?"

instantly her eyes sharply met mila's, filling with tears yet again. the dark-haired woman hugged mila again, eventually pulling away.

"yeah mila, i'm here now," she confirmed with a gentle smile.

a gentle hand rested on her shoulder, audrey was so caught up with mila that she hadn't even noticed.

and when she did...

well, let's just say it wasn't exactly pretty.

the loudest scream erupted from deep inside her throat, her body jumping in extreme shock. 014 whipped around, subconsciously pushing mila behind her as her green eyes glared at the man.

it was like an instinct and her gut screamed at her to back up, to leave.

"g-get away from us." she stuttered slightly, nerves racking through her body.

the blonde raised his hands, a slight smirk on his lips. "peace, i just want peace."

she snarled feverishly, eyes glistening with rage as she let mila go. "PEACE? YOU WANT PEACE?" her voice began to hurt as she screamed.

the shorter woman marched straight up to him, hand reeling back. SMACK! echoed throughout the living room.

his blue eyes looked at her with shame, no anger present. and looking at them, audrey collapsed into his arms, tears welling in her eyes.

"you... you killed her- you killed her and didn't even care!" she fumed, heart breaking further with every word.

mila looked on, eyebrows innocently raised as the tiny girl decided to just leave the two adults alone.

"i know, i know... i'm sorry." his hands pet her head, holding her in a comforting embrace.

"sorry? you're sorry? Don't apologize to me. apologize to mila."

a few minutes had passed and audrey had calmed herself enough to speak properly. her eyes glanced up at peter.

no words were spoken, yet his eyes shone with grief and years of sorrow. audrey leaned up, eyes flickering to his lips.

and finally, they met, lips tangling in a dance of sadness. butterflies raced through her tummy like they did the forst time they kissed.

"ew.." spoke a voice from the corner. audrey smiled into peters lips as she pulled away, looking at him deeply again.

and maybe it would take a while for her to forgive him.

but maybe one day she would, and the brunette wasn't going to rush that day.

"come here mila." audrey giggled softly, pulling both of them into a group hug.

001, 014, and 016 all pulled away.

lab rats, they were. and yet they were also a family. a broken family.

a broken family that would heal.

it wouldn't be quick, it wouldn't be fast. but it would happen eventually.

and audrey davis was a-okay with waiting.
