Chapter 15. Laena

Start from the beginning

Aegon took another sip of his cup. "Did you know the whore offered you dragon eggs if her dragon had more?"

"I don't want an egg given out of pity or charity, and Rhaenyra only did it to look good for the King." Aemond snapped, walking away.

"Wench! Another!" Aegon calls out, clapping his hands while Aemond shakes his head disapprovingly.

"Aegon." He whispered.

Standing close to his lady protector and her husband, Ser Criston turned to see Larys was watching the Princess. "Lyonel Strong's son's been staring at you since the moment we arrived, my Princess. Unabashedly."

Alicent refused to face Larys Strong, who leaned against the wall. She heard of what had happened in Harrenhal, Lyonel Strong's death and Harwin's suspicious survival. Larys had informed her of this, only to be met with the Targaryen consort screaming that she didn't want Lyonel to die, only to retire or resign from the position of Hand of the King. Now, Otto wore the pin representing his beloved occupation within the court.

"It is only a look of pride, Ser Criston. Larys Strong is the new Lord of Harrenhal since his father is dead and his brother has vanished."

Jace approached and stood silently at his two cousins-slash-aunts. Baela grabbed Jace's hand as they kept their heads low.

As Rhaenys passed many mourners, she saw Alicent approaching the mourning mother.

"Rhaenys. I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. Laena was a beautiful soul, too good and pure for our world."

Rhaenys sniffled. "Thank you, Alicent. I know how much Laena meant to you. She loved you like a sister."

The Queen who Never Was continued, glancing at Rhaenyra, who took a sip of her cup and grabbed a cup for herself, taking a sip as she returned to her granddaughters.

Rhaena began crying as Rhaenys hugged them. "Grandma."

"I don't want Mother to be gone."
Rhaenyra eyed Daemon again as Vhagar screeched loudly.

Vhagar's mourning too. She's mourning her rider.

Laenor stood at the water's edge, noticed by Corlys, who stormed over to Qarl and demanded he gets his son out, earning looks from the guests and a "brother" from Vaemond.

Daemon watched as Viserys shuffled over to his little brother. "Your girls are the very image of their mother: another comfort and anguish, I recall. It seems the gods have been especially cruel to you."

Viserys chuckles. "Yes."

From the corner of his eye, Daemon saw Rhaenyra circling the funeral guests like a vulture, eyeing him, making the Prince quietly huff as he paid attention to his brother.

"We would like you to visit us in King's Landing. It's time we reunited as a family." Viserys added, a hopeful look on his face.

"Dragonstone is my home and that of my children. Alicent is my home. My children are my home."

Viserys shook his head. "Daemon, I know we've had our differences, but let them pass with the years. There's a place for you, Alicent, and your children in my court if that's something you need."

"I need nothing from you. Not charity. Last I checked, my wife still draws breath, and yours doesn't!" Daemon spat, bowing his head and leaving the King.

"Brother." Viserys weakly said.

Rhaenyra watched him walk away, stopping when Otto said.

"Looks like Queen Laena proved as useless as Queen Aemma regarding birthing living sons. You and your sons are getting closer to the throne."
