2nd march 2008, afternoon (7 years old)

oscar's head hung low as he heard laugher from behind him. he took a small bite of his sandwich trying to block out the jabs and insults from the group of boys standing not too far from him.

"look at him eating all alone." one of them snickered.

"oscar piastri? more like pastry." another jabbed.

"pathetic piastri— ow!" oscar's head turned back at the yelp. a little brunette girl glaring angrily at the group of bullies.

"what did you just call him, wanker wally?" she raised an eyebrow at the boy. a stifled laugh came from some of the others.

"don't call me that!" wally protested.

"then leave him alone, you wanker."

"i'm going to tell!" he whined. the brunette rolled her eyes.

"are you a baby? quit whining and leave him alone." wally looked back at his friends. he huffed marching away with the rest in tow.

the brunette sighed turning to the boy she had just defended and smiled. oscar only stared at her in awe.

"why did you do that?" he blurted out as she took a seat on the table beside him.

"wow, piastri, a thank you would have been nice." she giggled, taking the other slice of his sandwich and chopping down on it. "they were bullying you. i don't like bullies."

"i'm— i'm oscar." he stammered. she laughed again and nodded.

"i know, you're in my class." she said finishing the slice, "i'm olivia."

oscar smiled and stretched his hand out to meet the little brunette's in a handshake. "we're friends now." she stated before stealing a cucumber from his lunch. "and these are my other friends."

"hey mate, wally's a real bugger." a tanned boy slipped into the place next to olivia.

"oscar, this is caleb and thats delara." she pointed to the girl who sat down beside him. oscar smiled and greet the pair.

"i'm doing it!" olivia exclaimed as she rode the surf on her board. she laughed with pure joy as the wave took her in.

oscar's hands made a shield over his head from the sun as she watched his best friend surf a wave for the first time without wiping out. his arms pumped into the air and he yelled as she came onto the sand.

olivia dropped the board running to her best friend and jumping into his arms. oscar lifted the girl slightly and spun her around as they laughed. "you did it!"

"finally!" olivia laughed remembering her countless wipe outs over the few weeks she had been learning to surf. "are you sure you dont want to come out with me? i can teach you! i'm pretty good now."

"okay," oscar patted her head and she tried to swat his hand away. oscar had grown taller then the brunette now which she found annoying. "just because you rode one wave doesn't mean you're a pro."

olivia rolled her eyes, "but i'll be one soon if i keep practicing. dad said i can take part in the local surf competition next month if i keep at it."

"will i be forced to come see you wipe out in front of a whole crowd of people?" olivia punched the aussie's arm causing him to yelp and rub the area.

"i come and watch you dnf in karting in front of a crowd." she huffed.
