On the far right corner was one word and one number.
Boldini 1918*
" Portrait of a woman in white. The model is suspected to be none other than the most celebrated French demi-monde, Rosanne Colette Beautemps." James presented proundly
"It's eerie, isn't it?"
" What do you mean?" Rosabelle asked, still lost in trance. It seemed like yesterday when she posted for a Giovanni Boldini's portrait.
" Well, don't you think you and the lady in the painting share an uncanny resemblance?"
" Rosanne colette beautemps was no lady." She corrected him. " The rose of le chabanais*. queen of wild flowers they called her."
" So I was told. Still, I thought you'd be amused. After all, it's not everyday that you'll find your historical doppelgänger. Do you like the painting, rosie?" James asked expectantly.
" You shouldn't have bought me this, Jaime. You are spoiling me terribly." she beamed at him sincerely. It had been a long time since she last saw the half-finished version of this portrait. Never had she expected that Giovanni Baldini would continue working on it even after her untimely death. Damn the influenza virus, Rosanne hadn't had enough fun.
James said, " I had this painting for a couple of months now since I initially planned to give it to you on your birthday. Thought it would cheer you up. I know you would be sad to lose your rococo vase, but I didn't want to give you another vase so as not to encourage your suitors to buy you flowers."
Rosabelle patted her brother's arm and smiled brightly. " Thanks so much, Jamie. I'll tell my future boyfriend just that. "
James snorted. He reached inside his suit pocket and produced a small blue velvet jewelry box.
A lovely art deco pink diamond and platinum bracelet greeted her as she opened the box.
She knew immediately who sent it.
" Sapphires for blondes, Rubies for brunettes, Emeralds for gingers, Diamonds for wife. Eddy did remember what I taught him."
" These are pink diamonds from van cleef & arpels's 1936 collection." James was confused.
" Yes. Because pink diamonds are for your only sister." Rosabelle said shamelessly.
" He had a message for you, Give me a little time and while you wait you can play with the bracelet." James imitated his older brother's voice. " Whatever he meant."
Rosabelle didn't offer further explanation.
" Thank you, Jamie, you really are the best third brother."
" I'd prefer to be the best brother." James complained halfheartedly.
While Rosabelle ate her breakfast, they chatted about the upcoming exhibitions at the Godfrey art center, the upcoming auction in Milan, which James planned to attend with her and Edwin's homecoming dinner next Sunday, which their father would like to host.
Finally, the subject of tonight's dinner guests came up. James had found 3 prospect buyers for her.
" All right, what's the classified info?" Rosabelle asked.
" Well, there is Clarisse Dubois. 43 year old french socialite. Heiress to her grandfather's winery. 4 rich husbands, 1 deceased, 2 divorced and one is in the process. We met occasionally at auctions. Surely, you know of her.
" Right." Rosabelle said unenthusiastically. " The witch of France. The way she looked at you makes me think that she wants to devour you alive."
In truth, all the women in her acquaintance wanted to devour lord james alive. No, not just Lord James. All three of her brothers.
