Request - Reader and Kayce were soldiers together they get home and marry someone (Kayce Monica) Reader gets orders to go back Kayce doesn't go. When Kayce calls his friend to ask if he can come Kayce asks if Reader is still home or where is she and a day earlier her tank got hit by a mine, she's in the hospital in a coma Kayce feels bad for not speaking to her and maybe he goes sees her.
Kayce had had just about all he could take from Monica. With her constant picking a part every life choice he's made, to her hatred of his family and the ranch, to her battles against him on how to raise Tate...he was at his wits end.
That's why re-enlisting was an out. He could earn a decent paycheck for his family, but he could also get out from under her thumb. While it was taking him away from Tate, he also knew it was the only way for him to make this work with Monica...to get away from her.
Kayce had left a few voicemails and texts messages to your phone, but he hadn't heard back from you in about a week now. Not that it wasn't uncommon, you and Kayce could go months without speaking and then pick back up. But he was struggling, and you were always good to help calm him down and figure out the best plan forward.
Kayce got out of his truck and thought to call Sam, who had served with both of you on your last tour. He waited while it rang, leaning against the front of his truck.
"Dutton? Didn't think I'd ever hear from you again," Sam laughed.
"Hey man," Kayce smiled. "How are you?"
"Eh, I'm alright...considering," Sam said. "What are you doing?"
"I-uh... know this might be weird, but have you heard from Y/N lately?" Kayce asked.
"Not since they finally told me some answers yesterday," Sam said. "You'd think those mother fuckers would understand the importance of our bond from serving?"
"What?" Kayce was confused.
"What do you mean, what?" Sam asked.
"What are you talking about?" Kayce asked.
"Y/N...?" Sam said. "Her tank got hit two das ago, remember?"
"What the fuck?" Kayce yelled. "Why didn't someone tell me?"
"No one told you?" Sam asked. "She's...she's in Germany man, recovering."
"Shit," Kayce ran a hand through his hair. "Is she alright?"
"I don't know," Sam said. "They won't tell me a whole lot, but she is alive. They put her in a coma to help her healing but that's the last they told me."
Kayce was stunned. You and he had been really close for a long time now, serving two tours together in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Kayce would go so far to say you were his best friend in public, and in private...well with a gun to his head he'd probably admit a whole lot more to how he felt about you.
"Is anyone with her?" Kayce asked softly.
"I don't know man," Sam sighed. "Like I said they haven't told me a whole lot."
"Thanks," Kayce cleared this throat. "I'll see if I can find anything more out."
"Good luck, man," Sam said before they hung up.
A week later
Kayce walked into the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. It had taken him two days to find anyone who would tell him something about you. Another day to figure out just where you were. Then two more days to gather his things and fly over to see you.
