"Listen to me! Hear me out! Help find an in between. It's not impossible for us to work together."
"It is when we hate each other."
"Well, how could anyone love someone like you?" Lia screamed.
Yeji backed off, closing her mouth and going silent in shock. She clearly said it in the heat of the moment, but that didn't lessen the way it cracked Yeji's heart.
"I don't know, Lia! Maybe that's why I have to stay with hookups. Maybe that's why my mother became a crazy alcoholic! Maybe that's why my father drank. Because how could anyone love me, right?"
"Oh, please. You know I didn't mean it like that. I'm not saying that you're the reason your parents were the way they were. It's never the child's fault. I'm just saying... I'm just saying that you don't know who you are! You don't have a non-work side of you. You're stuck in the working mentality. I know it's because you're not used to having someone around to care for you like a lover. But maybe I can be that way for you-"
"I don't need your fake romance. Don't worry, Lia. One year from now, we'll file divorce and then you'll find someone easier to love." Yeji turned towards the surrounding forest and began walking.
"Where are you going?" Lia scoffed.
"Finding somewhere to get off my feet and get away from you." Yeji shouted back.
"No. We have to talk about this-"
"There's nothing to fucking talk about!" Yeji screamed, turning around to face the other, "When will you get it, Lia? Our love is a cry for help. Every time we think we're getting somewhere something stupid ruins all of our progress. We were a mistake, we weren't meant to happen, Lia. Just accept that! We can't ever love one another, we aren't compatible. You may know everything about me, and that's what's wrong. I couldn't change the way you see me even if I tried. You know all my flaws and charms. And there isn't enough charm for you. Which is okay. It's not like that proposal was real anyway." Yeji started off yelling, but her voice faded into something tender.
"And what about me? How do you see me? The night you took me to dinner, you said you're always thinking of me. The night you saved me from my anemia, you did research for me. How do you feel about me, Yeji?" Lia retorted.
Yeji shook her head, turned around to think about it. But she didn't really have to think much about it at all. She turned back around and looked Lia in the eyes, even through the distance between them.
"I've realized that I have had feelings for you this whole time. Maybe it did start at the time you pretended to be my date that night in Paris. But I do think about you more than I ought to." Yeji swung her arms up with frustration, "There. Happy?" She huffed before turning around to do what she went to do originally.
Lia watched her walk away in shock. But she should have known. She saw it. She saw it in the way Yeji asked her of all people to save her from being stood up. She saw it in the way that Yeji trusted her enough to see her body because she was scared of being body shamed by social media in her drama. She saw it in the way that Yeji kept her around even when she made mistakes that would've gotten any other assistant fired, like when she walked in on her and Ryujin. She saw it in the way that Yeji's words in her fake proposal felt real.
The way she cared for her after the attack in the alley. The way she looked at her in the dress she bought her. The way she held her after the first time they made love to one another. The way Yeji panicked when she stumbled into the house nearly unconscious and the way Yeji rushed home from the gym after hearing that Lia's iron capsules had been replaced with something else.
Lia saw it.
And maybe Yeji wanted to build that couch together so badly because she noticed that Lia was spending more time away from her, recording her debut, so she needed to find a way to spend more time with her.
