Ava's pov
"You did what?!" Lily yelled in a hushed tone at me. "What will you tell your dad...and Nick?"
I visibly wince at the mention of his name.
"We had a fight so he knows I won't be going with him." I shrugged
"But you didn't tell him who you were going with, did you?" She glared.
"I don't have to tell him that, Lily." I say, before taking a bite of my sandwich.
It was lunch time and the guys had a meeting with their coach, giving us some space. I just told Lily about my plan to take Kayden to the party my father was hosting on friday. She did not take it well.
"Ava?" She called softly, playing with her taco.
"Yeah." I answer before sipping on my hot cocoa.
"Do you like Kayden?" She asked, making me choke on my drink.
"Wh...why would you think that?" I stuttered.
"I've seen how you stare at him. The notes you pass in class. You gave him your direct number, and now you're inviting him to your father's business party." She shrugged.
"I don't like him. I have to make it up to him after what Melissa and Nick did."
"He's not the first. And when did you start making up for their bad deeds." She said making me sigh. "Ava, I want you to be honest with me. Do you like him?"
As if on cue, the dark haired boy, walked into the cafeteria. He was alone today as Nate called in sick early this morning. His tan skin was glittering and his dark green eyes were glowing, reflecting the light of the sun coming through the windows. I always thought they contrasted with his hair. He vest was unbuttoned as usual, making me smile a bit at his mischievous nature.
"Yes. I like him." I sighed out.
"I know. You've smiling to yourself for a minute now just thinking about him." Lily said, grinning at me. "For how long?"
"Longer than you think." I mutter.
I've always liked the weird boy. I had first noticed him in the freshman year, when he slipped and fell at my feet. He couldn't stop staring at me and he seemed awestruck. I didn't speak to him cause I thought he was like the others. Few days later, I noticed he stole everyone's attention. The cute new boy. Every girl wanted him but...he didn't bat a lash for them. He was always staring at me, admirably.
I wanted to approach him. To talk to him. But I had Nick. Weeks later, news spread that he's on a scholarship. That made me impressed because it's difficult to get a scholarship at phoenix high. It made me intrigued by him. But then word spread that he was poor, trying to survive with his mother. No one wanted to communicate with the poor boy, including me.
What would my father say? What would my brother say?
"So you're inviting him as your date?" Lily said, still grinning like an idiot.
"No." I said in my bitchy tone. "I admit I have a...crush on him. But I'm not acting on it. I'm doing all this to apologize for my friend's behavior towards him."
"But... don't you think you're leading him on?"
Was I leading him on? I'm mean I did kiss him...and bought him a vest and I admit I have no control of my emotions when I'm around him but that doesn't...
"Oh shit." I say as reality hits me like a bitch.
"Well that's good. You like him and he likes you. That's how it's meant to be." Lily shrugged.
"No, it's not. We're.... we're not of the same social status. It won't work out." I say defeated.
"It has nothing to do with status. Only happiness." She said, softly. "When was the last time you put your happiness first?"
"I'm happy with Nick."
"No, you're not. Your father is happy that you're with Nick." She says. "C'mon Ava. Go for it."
I sigh and go to say something to her when my phone suddenly dings on the table. It was a text from...
'Yes I would love to accompany you...but I can't. I'm sorry.'
