and the one who tries to keep it together.
she is the older sister to Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin. ever since they were little, kailani has felt the need to look over her siblings and protect them from everything good or bad. after what had happened to their uncle, she wasn't risking any chances.
being 3 years older than them made her feel like everything was always on her, she had to do the right thing, say the right thing, and be a role model. kailani had to be absolutely perfect for them because if she wasn't, who would they end up being?
but she needed to grow and change and be the person that they knew so she did what she would do. she was an adult and she went to college, her whole life she had been doing things for other people and it was finally her chance to do it for herself. so she took it.
she began to study criminology. she decided that going to college was the best thing for her. criminology was the one thing she had wanted to do her whole life, growing up in woodsboro. her mom being the sister of randy meeks and her dad being joel martin. she wanted to be able to handle everything and know what was happening around her.
criminology wasn't about catching someone. it was about learning why people did what they did and why they did it. it was understanding that not everyone is crazy or angry or wants to watch the world burn. it was knowing that the world is a bad place in general and that is never going to change.
she wished she had grown up with randy. she wished that she knew him or who he was or what he was like. she was sadly born not too long after he died. her mom told her everything about him and it made her feel somehow connected to him even though she couldn't see him, hear him or talk to him.
kailani wasn't someone to believe in good but she was someone to know that there was bad and there was good but she didn't want to admit that. kailani wouldn't admit in her fear of the world. she wouldn't admit in her anger or pain or sadness.
she wouldn't admit that she believed the world was shit and that nothing would ever change. to admit knowing was to admit defeat and admitting defeat, meant admitting that nothing was going to change. she needed someone to tell her that there was good people. that the world could change. that the world was going to change and that there was good.
that person? was sam carpenter. her best friend since she was little. the one who would play hopscotch with her or pattie-cake. sam was the one person who understood what it was like to be angry at the world and she was going to be there for kailani no matter what.
because if there was one thing that they could admit, they could admit and say
"i did something bad"
