Chapter 13: A Glimpse of Light
A Subtle Change
The days that followed were challenging for YN. She was still plagued by the memories of her torment, the fear of returning to school, and the overwhelming isolation that came with it. But something had shifted within her a small, subtle change that pushed her to try and face the world, even if only a little at a time.
Her parents noticed the change, though they didn’t fully understand it. They were grateful to see her venturing out of her room more often, even if it was just to sit quietly in the living room or help out in the kitchen. They didn’t press her to talk, giving her the space she needed to heal.
An Unexpected VisitorOne afternoon, as YN sat at the kitchen table sipping tea, there was a knock at the door. Her mother answered it, and YN could hear the muffled sound of conversation. A moment later, her mother appeared in the doorway, a look of surprise on her face.
“YN, there’s someone here to see you,” her mother said, her tone curious.
YN’s heart skipped a beat. She wasn’t expecting anyone. Fear gripped her for a moment, but she forced herself to stand up and follow her mother to the front door.
To her surprise, one of her classmates was a girl named Jina. She wasn’t one of the bullies, but she wasn’t a friend either. They had barely spoken in the past. YN hesitated, unsure of what to say or do.
“Hey, YN,” Jina greeted her with a small, nervous smile. “I... I heard you weren’t feeling well, and I just wanted to check in on you.”
YN blinked, taken aback by the gesture. She hadn’t expected anyone from school to care about her absence, let alone visit her at home. “Oh, um, thanks,” she replied awkwardly, not knowing what else to say.
Jina shifted on her feet, clearly uncomfortable. “I know we haven’t really talked much before, but I’ve noticed... Well, I’ve noticed how those girls treat you. And I just wanted to say, I’m sorry. " I'm sorry I didn’t do anything to help.”
YN was stunned. She had grown so used to being invisible, to feeling like no one cared about her suffering, that Jina’s words took her completely by surprise. She felt a lump form in her throat, and tears threatened to spill from her eyes.
“It’s okay,” YN managed to say, though her voice wavered. “You didn’t have to do anything.”
“But I should have,” Jina insisted, her expression sincere. “No one deserves to be treated like that. I just wanted you to know that if you ever need someone to talk to, or even just to sit with, I’m here.”
A Flicker of Hope
YN didn’t know what to say. The gesture was small, but it meant more to her than she could express. For so long, she had felt completely alone, but Jina’s words gave her a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, she didn’t have to face everything by herself.
“Thank you,” YN finally whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “That means a lot to me.”
Jina smiled, and for the first time in a long while, YN felt a warmth spread through her chest that wasn’t born of despair. It was the warmth of kindness, of knowing that someone, even just one person, cared enough to reach out.
After a few more moments of conversation, Jina said goodbye and left, leaving YN standing in the doorway with a mix of emotions swirling inside her. She had grown so accustomed to the darkness that this small act of kindness felt almost foreign, but she clung to it like a lifeline.
A Night of Reflection
That night, as YN prepared for bed, she found herself hesitating before reaching for the sleeping pills. She was tempted to take them, to escape into her dreams and find comfort in Hoseok’s arms, but something held her back. The words Jina had spoken echoed in her mind, reminding her that there was still light in the world, even if it was faint and hard to find.
Instead of taking the pills, YN climbed into bed and closed her eyes, hoping that she could find peace in her own thoughts, without relying on the artificial dreams the pills induced.
To her surprise, she found herself drifting into sleep naturally, and when she entered the dream, Hoseok was there, waiting for her as always. But this time, there was something different about him; he seemed more at ease, more relaxed.
“You didn’t take the pills,” Hoseok observed, a small smile playing on his lips.
YN nodded, feeling a sense of pride in herself that she hadn’t felt in a long time. “I didn’t need them tonight.”
Hoseok’s smile widened, and he pulled her into a gentle embrace. “I’m proud of you, YN. You’re stronger than you realise.”
YN closed her eyes, savouring the warmth of his embrace. For the first time in what felt like forever, she believed him.
The Strength to Continue
As the dream slowly faded, YN felt a renewed sense of determination. The journey ahead was still daunting, and she knew there would be more dark days to come, but for now, she had found a small flicker of hope to guide her through the darkness.
And with Hoseok by her side, even in her dreams, she knew she could continue to fight.
