Request – A spring wedding between the Reader and Kayce. I won't give any specifics just that possibly it could be a two parter. Part One for the wedding. Part Two for the wedding night.
Part Two– The Reception
"And that's why you have to remember picking your side of the bed is important," Ryan slurred to you from the chair next to yours.
You giggled, enjoying how the evening had persisted into main the staff of the ranch and the Dutton family. The band was still playing softly off the to side, a few folks were slow dancing in the middle of the room, and everyone else had grouped up to chat. Kayce's jacket was draped over your shoulders due to the cooler temps this Spring night, but it smelled like him.
"Ryan," You laughed. "You know Kayce and I have lived together for the last three years, right? I think we have our sides down."
"Y/N!" Ryan dramatically placed his hand over his heart. "You mean you've been sleeping with an unmarried man?"
Your head leaned back as you laughed out loud.
"Shut up," Teeter kicked Ryan's chair. "She ain't no hussy!"
"Yeah man," Colby rolled his eyes. "Kayce will put you in the ground."
"I'm a lady," You batted your eyes to the trio who all chuckled. Your eyes scanned the room again and stopped when you spotted your husband.
Kayce was standing off to the side of the large tent with his father, their backs to you, each of them holding a whiskey glass. You rose from your seat and made your way over to them. The closer you got, the more you could hear their conversation.
"She'd have loved her," John cleared his throat.
"I think so," Kayce nodded. "Wish she could see tonight."
You knew they were talking about Kayce's mother, your hand automatically rubbing your engagement ring that had once belonged to her.
"She sees it," John glanced up before patting Kayce's shoulder and turning around. When he spotted you, he smiled and tipped his hat before moving past you.
"Hey cowboy," You whispered, wrapping both your arms around Kayce's, and leaning your head against his shoulder.
"Hi darlin," Kayce murmured, placing a kiss against your forehead. The two of you hadn't been alone since you left the main house three hours earlier. Your night had consisted of dinner with everyone, dancing in crowds, and having to speak to each person it seemed, individually. While it was humbling, it was starting to get to you.
"You wanna dance?" Kayce asked, looking down at you.
"Who's asking?" You asked joking, tilting your chin up. "Cause I'm married."
"Damn," Kayce smirked at you. "Did I miss my shot?"
"Mmhmm," You nodded. "And my husband will take you out if you try anything."
"He better know what he's getting," Kayce chuckled.
"Come on," You pulled on his arm and turned him towards the dance floor. "One last dance."
Kayce walked you out to the middle and the band switched to an old blue grass sounding slow one. Pulling you close, Kayce hugged you with one of his arms while the other hand held yours close to his chest. You both swayed to the beat, staring into each other's eyes.
"I love you," Kayce said.
"Love you more," You smiled.
Another minute passed before you saw Kayce's eyes leave yours for something behind you. Turning your head, you saw John walk up next to you.
"Mind if I cut in?" John asked.
Kayce looked at you for approval and you nodded your head, removing your arms from his and offering them to John. John took you and spun you out and back in before settling into a sway. You giggled and watched Kayce walk off the floor towards Tate.
"Congratulations," John smiled at you.
"Thank you, John," You said. "For everything."
"I should be the one thanking you," He laughed. "For everything you've done."
"What do you mean?" You asked. "What have I done?"
"Y/N..." John shook his head. "You put life back into my son when everyone thought he wouldn't come back."
You swallowed hard, your eyes searching John's for an explanation. This wasn't the first time he had said something along the lines like this to you. IT wasn't lost on you the challenges you and Kayce had at the beginning of your relationship.
Kayce was a recent divorced single father, constantly fighting with his own family for doing what was moral and just. He had some PTSD from his time in the service, but also struggled to find his path back here in reality. Kayce was a hot head, had major anger management issues, and always jumped to fight instead of converse.
But you fell in love with him the moment you saw him on the ranch that day. Slowly you charmed him too, by speaking reasonably to him but also giving him grace when he needed it. You were wonderful to his son, Tate. The three of you already had so many cherished memories together. One thing that drew you more to Kayce was the sense you both had of what the other needed without having to put it into words.
If Kayce came home with bruises, he didn't need an interrogation from you. He needed you to hold him in bed and whisper that you loved him, remind him that he was needed and not a monster. When you were frustrated with a task or person, Kayce knew to give you space...that eventually you would crawl into his lap on the front porch and the tension would disappear. It was a balance and a dance you both perfected quickly.
"He's helped me too," You whispered.
"I've never seen him love like this," John nodded. "There's Tate and that's a different thing...father and son...but with you, I've just never seen it."
"I wouldn't want it any other way," You said honestly. "He's part of me."
The song ended and John placed a kiss on your forehead before taking a step back. The band started another song and Kayce stepped in front of you again, assuming the same position you both had been in earlier.
"What was that about?" Kayce asked curious.
"He was just being nice," You shrugged.
"Does he know how to do that?" Kayce joked.
"He thanked me," You smiled. "For helping you but I said that you had helped me too and I didn't want it any other way."
"Been an interesting five years," Kayce's hold on your tightened. "I'd say you could change your mind but it's a little late for that."
"You don't scare me," You winked up at him, making Kayce laugh.
The song ended and a more fast paced one started up. Kayce led you over to where Tate was waiting, and you wrapped your arms around him.
"I think we're gonna call it a night," Kayce said to his son and father.
"We'll take it from here," John smiled.
You kissed Tate's forehead as he squirmed away from you and wrapped an arm around Kayce's middle as you both quietly snuck out from the party. The sounds and laughter faded as you made you way to the smaller cabin on the property. Reaching the steps, you got about two up before Kayce's pulled your arm back, causing you to fall into him
"Kayce!" You cried, but he pulled you into his arms and held you up as he stepped up and over the threshold.
"Yes, Mrs. Dutton?" Kayce smirked at you as he sat you down inside the cabin. You giggled as he shut the door behind you both.
