Many years ago Professor Gerald Robotnik, among other brilliant scientists hired by the Gaurdian Units of Nations, G.U.N., created a top secret space colony in order to create weapons of mass destruction and research possible life beyond the planet's atmosphere. Gerald had no interest in weapons his goal was to better mankind, he wanted a cure for all diseases and ailments that affected life on Earth.
Gerald rubbed his temples to relieve the headache that had been forming, it had been ten years and even with all his knowledge he had made no progress with Maria's condition. The girl was soon turning eleven and all he had to offer was medication to rid the pains but no cure.
Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome, the illness that plagued his granddaughter and her mother before her, the illness ate away at a person's nervous system weakening white blood cells and making even the weakest of germs or diseases deadly. The ARK was created to support blood flow with it's lower gravity and helped lighten the heaviness the body usually carries.
Gerald had thrown the file into the trash, it was a folder from G.U.N. a militaristic group under the United Federation to create an ultimate lifeform. Whatever they had wanted was beyond understanding, and Gerald knew this, but it seemed all his research all his time had been leading nowhere. He looked at the trash and scratched his chin, the funding would help him access more information for study and experimentation he could perform upon the ARK.
"Grandpa!" Her soft voice called through the halls.
Without hesitation the old man left his desk and searched out the young girls voice outside his office, "Ahh Maria, shouldn't you be resting in the medbay?" He already knew the answer but the girl was a soft spot he had no intention of ever letting harden.
The young blonde jumped into her grandfather's arms and embraced him, "Dr. Topaz said I could exercise and I-"
"You want the skates?" Gerald interrupted, "You know I'd never say no to you, my dear." He put the girl down and went back into his office to retrieve a pair of old rollerskates from his desk, they were the only things in the drawers that he actually took out on a regular basis. "Now remember dear, don't push yourself and-"
"Stay in the halls." It was her turn to interrupt him, he chuckled as he handed over the skates, "I'll be careful, thank you grandpa." She fastened the laces and slowly skated out of her grandfather's office. His smile faded and he couldn't stop himself from looking at the trash.
"Am I really doing this?" The thought of playing into the government's hand disgusted him but losing his granddaughter left him even more sick. With a heavy sigh he grabbed the folder labeled 'Project: Shadow'. Upon inspecting the documents in the file it was nothing but theory, a pipe dream that would most likely never come true in his or any lifetime. A creature beyond time, beyond mortality, if he even were to succeed he had no doubts that G.U.N. would use it as a weapon to hold over any opposition. The old man pinched the brim of his brow and opened his emails on the desks built in computer, he paused to look at the photo of Maria that was his homescreen and sighed once more, "For Maria," he said softly as he began typing a message to the United Federation's president. He hadn't known at the time and would never learn but this decision, this one choice would change the course of history and reshape not just his life but Earth as a whole.
