EDMUND WAS WALKING through the streets of London, hoping to join the war and become a soldier -- since he was, technically, a king. Obviously none of the stupid people at the desk knew that, so all he had was hope, which someone always ruined.

He arrived and joined the line. Finally, it was his turn.

When the man at the desk looked up at Edmund, he instantly said what was on his mind: "You don't look eighteen."

Edmund had to force himself not to roll his eyes.

"Why? Do I look older?" Edmund replied, sarcastically.

The man put his hand out for the ID.

"Alberta Scrubb?" He said as he read the ID, confused.

"That's a typographical error, sir. It's meant to be Albert.A.Scrubb," Edmund corrected quickly. The man was already hesitating to believe he was eighteen, now he didn't believe he was a boy. He needed this man to believe him; he needed to win a fight -- and not one against his idiotic cousin.

Suddenly, Lucy's voice echoed through the recruitment hall, "Edmund, you're meant to be helping with the groceries!"

Sighing, Edmund closed his eyes, telling himself to breath so he wouldn't get angry. She always did this. Always destroyed his hope when he was getting close to being recruited -- though he didn't think the man would've done so anyway.

Grumpily, Edmund picked up the ID.

As Edmund walked towards his sister, a person, from the line of boys waiting to be recruited, ruffled his hair and laughed: "Ha! Better luck next time. Aye, sqirt?"

Edmund ignored him, and continued to walk out of the building with Lucy.

"Edmund, I really don't see why you keep trying to sign up," Lucy complained in her usual mum tone. Ever since Susan left she'd been acting more like her -- it was getting boring and very annoying. "You're not even old enough."

"He called me sqirt, Lucy. I've been in wars; I've lead armies; I was a king!"

"You're not a king here, Edmund." That was the exact reason why he wanted to go back. To have a purpose.

Edmund was still complaining when he saw Lucy do a weird motion with her hand in her hair.

"What are you doing?" He asked, not understanding why she wasn't paying attention to him.

She looked at him, and turned around to walk back to their cousin's house. "Nothing, Ed. Now, come on, we have to get back."

Honestly, Edmund would do anything to get away from that house. Their uncle ignored them; his cousin was so annoying with his witty comments; they rarely saw their aunt because of her work. But he stayed with them because soon he would be back with Susan, Peter and their father.
