Sometimes you think you're not as drunk as you are. While you could normally handle yourself, you had been sitting on that bar stool for three drinks now (at least) so while your mind seemed to be clear, you hadn't yet proved it by standing up. It was Friday night and while you all had work on the ranch tomorrow morning, you had decided to come into town and blow off some steam from the rough week. It was July, it was hot, there hadn't been rain in over seven weeks, and everyone's patience was wearing thin. So, Kayce and Rip took the wranglers, plus you and Beth, to the bar for the evening.
You were one of the Vet tech's for the Yellowstone, in hopes of becoming the head vet here in a few years when the current one retired. Originally from eastern Montana, you were used to the ways out here and had enjoyed the past year. You had developed a friendship with the youngest Dutton too...which may or may not have been one of the reasons you were content with staying here.
Kayce was fascinating to you. He had definitively been formed by his father's ways, but he still held on to a moral compass inside of him. His son, Tate, probably had a big part to play in all that. He was loyal to a fault, and a hard worker. His looks also didn't hurt him in your eyes. But he was cautious...while you two were considered friends, he would only let you both go so far down a road of a romantic possibility so far before he would draw back. After asking Beth about once, you learned his marriage with Monica didn't start or end well, so he was probably very concerned with hurting you or doing something that would upset you from the start.
Currently, he was standing next to you, facing you, but talked to Lloyd about something to do with the way John Dutton used to handle cattle salesmen back in the day. Kayce had another cold beer in his hand, his cheeks were slightly pink, and a small smile was on his face. You sat, watching him until he felt your eyes. He glanced at you once and his smile grew, but when he glanced a second time and saw you were still watching him, he focused his attention to looking directly down at you.
"Yes?" Kayce laughed, brining the beer to his lips, and taking a drink. Why was that simple act so attractive to you right now? You knew it had been the alcohol you had consumed that took over your next words.
"Are you ever gonna ask me out?" You had to speak up a little due to the music, but you kept it to where only Kayce really heard you. Lloyd might have, had he kept his attention on the two of you, but he had moved on.
"What's that?" Kayce choked a little as he swallowed.
"I didn't stutter," You smirked and leaned towards him a few inches.
"How many beers have you had?" Kayce smiled at you, placing his beer behind you on the bar.
"Not enough to not know what I'm asking," You challenged him. But then you made a mistake and stood up. Thankfully your hand was pressed against the bar because you felt all the alcohol rush straight to your head. So maybe you had a few too many beers?
"Y/N..." Kayce shook his head, but his smile stayed on his lips. "Be careful."
"Careful of what?" You stepped towards him, becoming only an inch away from him. The movement made you sway just enough for Kayce to reached out and grab hold of your hip to steady you. Your hand found its way to rest on top of his, pushing it around to the pocket of your jeans.
"Y/N," Kayce cleared his throat. "You're drunk."
"M'sober enough cowboy," You shook your head, but allowed him to move his hand back to your waist. "Promise."
"Let's get you home," Kayce motioned to the bar tender that he wanted to wrap things up here. You felt yourself frown, your mind not in the right headspace to understand how he was trying to be a gentleman.
"S-Sorry," You tried to step back but the barstool was in your way. "I guess I read that wrong."
Kayce looked over at you and raised an eyebrow. "Read it wrong?"
"You," You nodded, biting your lip. "I guess I thought you...I don't know."
You tried to step away from him, but with the barstool and his actual body you couldn't get around him easily. Plus, when Kayce wrapped his arm around your waist and started to lead you out of the bar you didn't have much choice but to follow. The fresh air helped a small bit as Kayce led you to his truck. You realized no one else was with you though as you climbed into the passenger seat. It was quiet on the drive back to the ranch, but you got curious when Kayce didn't take you to the bunkhouse but pulled up at the foreman's house. Guess you were walking back.
"Where you going?" Kayce called after you had taken a few messy steps away from his truck. You turned as pointed to the bunkhouse like it was obvious. "Get inside, woman."
"What?" You asked confused.
"Come inside so you can sleep off those beers," Kayce held out his hand to you.
"You have one bed," You murmured.
"I'm aware," Kayce smirked at you. "I'll sleep on the couch."
"I can walk back," You went to take a step and slipped, if it wasn't for Kayce's reflexes you would have fallen, but he pulled you close to him and laughed.
"Sure," He pushed you towards his cabin. "Let's get you to bed."
The next morning.
Kayce had put you to bed, you falling asleep quickly after and not waking up until the next morning for work. When you woke up, Kayce was already down at the barn but there was a hot cup of coffee waiting for you. After changing into new clothes at the bunkhouse you made your way over to where the wranglers were all gathered with their horses. Your eyes found Kayce who had his horse and yours in his hands.
"Thanks," You muttered, slightly embarrassed.
"Good morning," Kayce smiled at you. "We're riding up to pasture seven today, bring the heifers down to three."
"Alright," You nodded, turning to adjust the saddle and make yourself busy instead of acknowledging what took place the night before. Suddenly, a burnt orange wild rag was draped in front of your face, coming around your neck. Looking back, you saw it was Kayce, tying his rag around your neck.
"It's gonna be dusty," Kayce muttered to you.
"Thanks," You felt your cheeks burn at the gesture.
"You're welcome," Kayce's hand turned you back around to face him. "You're a little quitter than you were last night."
"Thought you'd appreciate that," You let out a small laugh. "You were pretty uncomfortable with me if I remember."
"Well," Kayce cleared his throat, placing his cowboy hat on top of his head. "When a pretty girl makes a move on you, it's hard to not get flustered."
He sent you a wink and then got up on his horse. You were slightly confused before it clicked with you in what he said.
"You kept pushing me away!" You cried out.
"You know how hard that was?" Kayce laughed, turning his horse around.
"What game are you playing, Dutton?" You shook your head. "Do you or do you not want me?"
"Oh, I want you," Kayce smirked back at you. "I just want you sober because I want you to remember every detail about it."
With that he took off, leaving you in a little dust storm from his horse's hooves.
"Fucking cowboys," You muttered, pulling yourself up on your own horse.
