When the man opened his eyes and saw her, it was like a flash of light that ignited the darkness within him.

The sight of her brought wonder and relief at the same time. It was like waking up from a long sleep when he felt full of life and energy again. He felt as if he could touch the sky and had a strong feeling that there were no limits.

The only thought he had was to be grateful for the moment. Time seemed to stop when he looked at her and it was as if his world filled with color. It was like a glimpse of another, more perfect world where he could be free and happy.

There was something else in the woman's look, she looked at the man and smiled. Her previously chestnut eyes were gone, replaced by blue-gray ones. They were as full of life as the man remembered them from the last time he saw her. He missed her smile and eyes full of color. He missed her.

The man was speechless, not knowing how to react and too stunned to move. The woman laughed and came closer to him, now the man noticed her appearance. She looked like a goddess, a piece of rich cloth hanging from her like an elegant dress, she had a wreath of flowers in her dark black hair, and she was walking barefoot in the meadow. The most amazing creature he had ever seen.

The woman raised her hand to the man. "How about we start over? I'm Thana Moira,'' she introduced herself simply.

"Niklaus Mikaelson, mon amour," he smiled lovingly at her and instead of taking her hand and shaking it, he took it and kissed the back of her hand with a bow. He then looked at her again and they just looked into each other's eyes. The man, Niklaus, still couldn't believe he was here. He thought he had failed and her soul was gone forever, he thought he had lost her despite his love for her.

Even if this was the afterlife, or the last gift before he was to visit the underworld and eternal suffering, he was not angry. He had already accepted the fact that he might be dead and that this was the last time he would be with her, but he didn't want to waste this moment. He had lost so much time not being with her...

And so Niklaus asked the question he wanted to ask. "Is this real? Or are we both dead?''

Thana looked at him and sadness flashed in her eyes. "We both died a long time ago, but that doesn't mean it's not real."

"But you have no soul, I... I stopped feeling our bond," Niklaus said in a broken voice.

''I do not have? Maybe,'' she shrugged. "But that doesn't mean that the part of the soul that is preserved in you has been destroyed," she smiled sadly at him and turned away from him. He walked closer to her and even though she was looking anywhere but his eyes, he made her eyes meet his for a moment. He grabbed her cheeks and just stared at her as she spoke to him. "I know you might be mad at me, furious, so feel free to yell at me-''

He interrupted her as he placed his lips on hers. He kissed her passionately and she kissed back.

He felt her body collapse and his hands found their way to her side. He held her gently but still firmly to keep her from falling as her hands hung around his neck. He kissed her despite the taste of salty tears.

With her limp body in his arms, he slumped to the grassy ground with her and broke the kiss. He held her against his chest and kissed her forehead before burying his head in her neck... and started to cry.

''You're here...'' he whispered between quiet sobs and her undead heart broke. She knew he loved her, she just didn't know he would love her after all of this. When she was someone else, not human, not existing, not his soulmate... not someone he had wished for and longed to meet for a century. But she was wrong, he loved her for who she was. "I thought I lost you forever when I let you go..."

And so... for the first time in her entire existence, Death shed a tear. For years, she was as powerless about love as anyone from whom she involuntarily took it. She never felt pity for the families she tore apart every day, even though she knew it hurt.

But this wasn't someone, it wasn't some family, or a random person... this was her soulmate. Someone who would love her no matter what or who she was. Who would fight for her to the last breath. Someone who would let her go even though it would break his heart, but would never let her go if she asked him to.

It wasn't her happy ending because villains don't get happy endings. No...

He was her happy plot in her story.

And that was enough because he became her everything.

For the first time Death accepted eternity, accepted him as hers always and forever. Yet this time spent with him will be nothing to her eternity, it will be all she will have.

She couldn't love him with every heartbeat because her heart stopped beating long ago. And she couldn't love him forever because one day her love would become just a memory, so she said...

''I love you until the last ocean dries up, I love you until the last star in the night sky fades, I love you until I can speak your name, I love you until the world falls apart, I love you until I can breathe, I love you until everything dissolves into dust...''

And even then, I'll find a way to love you... she wanted to say, but she couldn't lie. Because she would watch everything turn to dust and she knew that everything would end one day. One day the last drop of water will dry up, one day the last star in the night sky will go out, one day there will be nothing where his name can be heard, one day the world will fall apart, one day she will stop breathing because there will be nothing, one day everything will be dust...

One day she will stop loving him.

Despite knowing some uncertainty, despite everything that wasn't said, he whispered before kissing her. ''I love you.''

Death didn't have to love him forever, because he would do it for both of them. He would love her even after death, even if everything turned to dust. Even though she would stop loving him.

This was their moment that could turn into eternity, because eternity can feel like a moment. So maybe soon they will be nothing, not even a memory.

Not even a memory...
