For the first time in almost year, Dave was in his bed. For the first time in almost seven years, Dave was in bed with Karkat.
Dave was wide awake, he couldn't sleep. How could he? This was a historical event, a good one too! He couldn't just go to sleep and not fully savor this moment as well as every minuscule detail. He owed it to the people. When the inevitable reporters or interviewers or biography writers or whoever the fuck else came knocking on his door, Dave wanted to make sure he could tell them exactly how happy he was. How much he loved Karkat. How he stayed up all night admiring him because he was just so beautiful and strong and Dave couldn't get enough of him. Of how his thick brows still furrowed in his sleep. How his mouth refused to fill close in his sleep and how he'd always drool because of it. How no matter how much he moved around, he still kept a hand with Dave at all times. They were inches apart, legs tangled together and fingers intertwined. Moonlight spilled into their room, landing right on Karkat's face and making him look so absolutely beautiful that Dave almost clutched his heart and openly wept tears of joy. Dave wanted to paint a picture so the world could see Karkat exactly how he saw him. Dave wanted every citizen of Earth C to know how much he loved Karkat, and he knew Karkat would love cheesy over-the-top romantic shit like that even if it was a little embarrassing.
The troll snored loudly and a fresh drop of drool slid out the corner of his mouth. Dave stifled a laugh and used the corner of their blanket to gently wipe the drool off Karkat's chin. Taking a second to simply admire his sleeping (boyfriend? They never really labeled themselves, does that even matter? Maybe. This is something for future Dave and Karkat to figure out.), uh roommate and couldn't help himself. Leaning in closer, he pressed a kiss against the sleeping trolls forehead. Karkat stirred and very soon his eyes fluttered open.
"Sorry for wakin' ya." Karkat grumbled and blinked sleepily. "Go back to sleep darlin'." He grumbled again, shaking his head a little.
"Why're you—" Karkat yawned. "—awake? Don't you have work in the morning?" Karkat curled up close to Dave, nuzzling his head under Dave's chin. His horns prodded him painfully but it was totally worth it. Dave's heart was beating fast and the melting feeling of happiness came back and oh man was it awesome to feel. Wrapping his arms around the troll he buried his face in Karkat's hair. Oh yeah, this right here was bliss.
"Y-Yeah. I do..." Dave began. Did he have to have work though? He was a god with a bazillion dollars in his bank account. He didn't need a job, he especially didn't need two! He could live off that forever and he'd still be able to pay for stuff like universal healthcare and good public transport in his section of the world. "...What if I just quit my job. Jobs. Both of 'em. Fuck it, no more job. I getta be me s'more, reunite with my passions and shit. Hang out with the raddest red-blood this side of the galaxy. Live life without the restraints of a job....jobs."
"Hold on," Karkat propped himself up on an elbow, looking down at Dave incredulously, "have you not been telling me this whole time you're poor?"
"Well I mean yeah. I am. Right now."
"But you want to quit both your jobs? None of this sounds like a smart idea, in fact this sounds like a downright ass for brains idea."
"No no, dude. I'm poor right now but like, as a choice. I have access to infinite money but I just want to be an everyday guy who just hangs, you know?"
"So this entire fucking time you have had access to an infinite amount of money and you still decided to live in a shit apartment and work two jobs to barely make enough money to survive. Why on our green goddamn earth would you do something as stupidly stupid as that?" Dave shrugged.
"Dunno. Distraction from losin' you. The average joe life I craved. Didn't know what else to do. Pick your favorite." Karkat sighed and shook his head, plopping back down and rolling onto his back.
