"We just dropped off Charlie at school, will you two meet us after the appointment?" Carolyn asked as she was currently having a phone call with her son"Yes mom, we'll stop by after the check up at the hospital. I have to go now, we should get ready to leave. Bye mom!" Derek said and ended the call
Meredith was finishing a round of nebulizing. She had been coughing a few times to get the mucus lose as she wanted to be in the best shape possible for her appointment, wanting to postpone being admitted as much as she possibly could
"Hey Mer, everything okay?" Derek walked in with her jacket and shoes
His wife nodded. "Almost done." She spoke up
"Great, I'm gonna go grab my stuff." He kissed her forehead and walked off
Eventually it took a little longer before the two of them were finally ready to leave. They sat in the car in silence, their hands linked as Derek drove the way to the hospital and parked the car
"Damn, the weather is nice today." Derek commented as they walked inside the hospital together. "Do you wanna wear a mask?" He offers her
"Nah, we're not going through the ER." Meredith shook her head. They got into the elevator and met with Teddy
"Meredith, Derek!" She smiled widely. "Let's go, everything is ready for you." She smiled at Meredith, wanting to calm her down
"Thanks." Meredith nods and entered the room first, taking a seat on the examination table, coughing a little, which wasn't unusual.
"Okay Meredith, I'm starting by listening to your lungs, but I probably shouldn't tell? You know this routine by heart." Teddy chuckled but frowned as she started to examine Meredith. "Do you experience extreme shortness of breath? Or the feeling you drown at night?" She asks
"Uh.. sometimes but I'm always half sitting when sleeping, it keeps my airway more open." Meredith explained
Derek noticed Teddy's facial expressions and started to get slightly worried about his wife, but not wanting to speak up yet
"Can you stand on the scale for me, please?" Teddy asked Meredith and guided her off the table, noticing Meredith started to cough again and steadying herself against the table as if she was a little dizzy
Meredith stood on the scale and smiled at what she saw
"Your weight went up. But not enough to feel safe with your transplant, Mer.." Teddy sighed, really not liking what she saw
"At least it's going up." She shrugged
"I'll run some blood tests and get your blood pressure checked. I'll also order a CT scan." Teddy said and disappeared for a minute
"Not good?" Meredith looked at her husband with a frown
"Dunno. She didn't look very happy." Derek sighed, walking over to his wife and kissing her lips. "It will be okay." He grabbed her hand and squeezed it
"Okay guys, let me continue." Teddy said and adjusted all the medical equipment on Meredith's body
"And?" Meredith looked up once Teddy finished and started to remove everything
"Meredith.. I'm gonna be completely honest.. I'd rather admit you." She started
"No! Please! One more week.." Meredith begged
"Hmm.. Only if Derek takes the week off and stays with you.." Teddy sighed.
"Deal." Derek quickly nods. "I'll take the week off and then we'll come in."
"I just want to take you to CT for that scan, just to see how quick it's going, you can leave afterwards." Teddy smiled at the two
Meredith and Derek nodded. They followed Teddy in silence, both had to take in the news that next week Meredith's hospital stay would start. They hadn't figured out a schedule yet and it seemed terrifying. Meredith could die if they don't find her a new pair of lungs
"Meredith?"
Meredith got pulled out of her thoughts by Derek leading her in a changing room where she had to get dressed in one of those itchy and ugly hospital gowns.
"Sorry." She whispered and let her husband help her get dressed.
"It's overwhelming, I know. But just the scan, then we're going to see mom and dad and I promise we'll get everything figured out before you get admitted. We can go ride the ferries, eat tons of strawberry ice cream and whatever else you want." Derek said to cheer her up and it seemed to work a bit as she started to softly smile. "Now go, I'll wait in the techroom." Derek kissed her and watched how Meredith slowly left the changing room
She slowly walked on her socks over to the machine. She lay down as she always did, her arms folded behind her head and taking a deep breath, feeling like she had to cough but trying to keep it still until the scan ended
"You're doing amazing, love." Derek's voice was heard through the intercom
Meredith kept focussing
Don't start coughing
"Okay Dr Grey, we're done." The tech said
Derek opened the door to the machine and saw his wife starting to sit up, she started to cough violently, even Teddy was frowning from behind the glass
Meredith felt like her lungs were ripped out, her chest was on fire and she had no clue what happened. She reached for her chest as she coughed, her husband holding her up
Teddy ran into the room, seeing Meredith's head facing her lap. She lifted Meredith's head and what she saw looked absolute horror
Meredith's gown was red from the blood
"W-What?!" Derek looked in horror at his wife
"Someone get me a gurney and oxygen!" Teddy screamed, nurses running in the room
"Dr Shepherd, give them some space-" Linda tried to pull him away from Meredith
"What the hell happened?!" Mark ran in
