Request – You tell Kayce you're pregnant.

It was four days before Christmas and while the rest of Montana was bundled up and shut into their homes, you were out with Kayce in Bozeman...trying desperately to find something for your father-in-law for a present. Kayce had groaned all afternoon that it didn't matter but you were determined. This was the first Christmas you were his daughter-in-law and you'd be damned if you didn't try and find something for the man.

This was your last hope, a small antique store at the edge of town. It went on for about five warehouses and countless rows of "shit" according to Kayce. You loved it, getting lost in all the different items, seeing what things could be repurposed for. You were just having a hard time finding something John would toss aside or burn after he opened it.

You didn't have a bad relationships with John, but it was strained at times in your history. When you met Kayce, you were both fresh out of a relationship that ended terribly...his being a divorce. After two years you agreed to finally move in with him at the Yellowstone ranch and a year after that he asked you to marry him. The wedding was this past spring and it had been everything you wanted. But now you were second guessing every choice you had made regarding John Dutton because you couldn't find one thing for the man.

"Babe..." Kayce had called out to you four times now and you were pretty sure you were about to impale him with one of the fireplaces sticks you had been looking at. "Can we please start again tomorrow?"

"No, Kayce," You sighed, moving to your left and looking down the next aisle. "We're expected to get a foot of snow by tomorrow and then I'll be stuck with you and no gift for your father."

"He doesn't need anything," Kayce argued for the hundredth time. "God knows he's given you enough troubles to earn anything from you."

"You've given your own fair share of those troubles to me," You glanced back at Kayce, smirking.

"Yeah, but I make it up to you at night," Kayce winked, causing you to laugh out loud.

"Or during the day," You mumbled walking onward. "Just left me finish looking down these last few aisles and then I'll give up."

"We don't even do gifts," Kayce said following you.

"Correction," You looked back at him. "You, Duttons, don't do gifts but I do."

"He probably hadn't gotten you anything," Kayce rolled his eyes.

"That doesn't mean I don't want to get him something," You argued. "It's not about reciprocation or competition."

"Then what's it about?" Kayce asked.

You stopped and thought about your answer. Why were you so concerned about John's gift? You had found something for everyone else in Kayce's family, but he was stumping you for some reason. You didn't want to open the wound, but it probably had something to do with the fact that John was a father figure you hadn't had in your life since you were seven. Your father died from cancer, and while your mother figured it out...you still missed your dad.

John had stepped in seamlessly as that person to you even without really trying. You two shared a loved for the outdoors and horseback riding. You had an old soul to you he admired, but a strong opinion that reminded him of his wife Evelyn. When you lived in the main house the two of you would get up early and have coffee dates on the porch if the weather was nice. You'd either talk about anything or sit in comfortable silence. John had a daughter, Beth, but you were something special to him.

While Kayce appreciated the fact you and his father got along, he also didn't fully understand your admiration of the older man, the role he played. While as a father, John was very flawed with his own children, he felt as though he got a second chance with you.
