ANNE'S POV

Sasha kissed her. Sasha fucking kissed her. It's all that Anne has in her mind while climbing trees and helping Sprig tearing up spiderwebs from spider nets.

-Anne? Are you okay?- After half an hour without saying anything, Sprig jumps on the closest branch. Anne gasps.

-Oh, Sprig! Nah, I'm just...fine. I think. Have you ever had a crush?- She asks all of sudden, blushing. Sprig furrows and tears another spider web.

-Well... there's Ivy. She's cool and I want to stay with her. But, nah, it's nothing serious.- Sprig says and lets the strands fall down the tree, where another frog takes those. Anne sighs.

-I have a crush, you know? And they're smart and charming and so goofy and that's so pretty. I love to stay with them.- Anne says, she feels her heartbeat growing faster as she thinks of Marcy. Sprig turns his head to her.

-But...?-

-But I don't know how I feel about another person. Oh, she's so strong and determinated and she makes me laugh and she makes me feel protected. But I like Marcy!- Anne tugs her mouth all of sudden, she wasn't supposed to say their name! She glances at Sprig, worried, but the little frog shrugs.

-I'm your best friend Anne. I won't tell anyone.- He comforts her. Anne sighs and tears a spider web.

-That's good. Thanks, Sprig. So...how do I resolve this situation?- Anne asks, hoping in Sprig. The little frog feels under pressure, he jumps another time on another branch.

-Honestly I have no idea Anne. If you like Marcy, just tell Sasha that you don't like her.- He proposes. Anne nods like she'll think about it but she already knows that, after what happened, there's no way she'll push behind Sasha.

She doesn't want to break her heart. Plus, that kiss felt good. Anne felt good. She groans, confused. How she can chose between Marcy and Sasha? She decides she won't tell Marcy about the kiss. She can't break their heart.

...

The hours pass and soon the sky becomes red and dark orange, palette of the sunset. Anne and Sprig put the last spider webs in a bag and they climb down the tree. Anne jumps the last tract of the trunk and her shoes sink into a puddle. She twists her nose, disgusted, but she's slowly getting used to living in a swamp. She almost doesn't feel the mud in her socks.

Sprig jumps near her and fixes his hat better on his head.

-Ready to return, Anne?- He asks, Anne nods and they start walking side by side. Sprig jumps a few steps ahead and removes some branches, Anne helps him making their way in the wood. Soon they found two frogs with two bags of spider webs and they return together to Wartwood.

Anne spots Sasha, she's talking with a yellow frog.

-That's Ivy!- Sprig murmurs, excited, and Anne blushes looking at that strange pair.

-Let's go.- She mutters and drags Sprig away from there. They enter inside Wartwood and Anne leaves the bag in a corner of the square, near a few others bags. All the other have been already braided and took in the swamp. Anne takes a deep breath. She has to act normal, calm.

-Anna Banana!- Marcy calls her from behind and Anne flinches, feeling the usual shiver of emotion when she sees Marcy. She smiles and waves to them.

-Mar Mar! Have you finished with your genial trap?- Anne asks, making Marcy smile. Anne's smile cracks when she thinks of Sasha. She feels a strange heat on her lips. Quick, Anne rubs her mouth with an hand.

-Yep, we did everything! Now we have just to wait for the night and the LandCrusher.- Marcy plays with a dark lock of hair.

-Hey, Anne...- They say, Anne can see now all their nervousness.

-Yes, Mar Mar?- She asks, gentle. Following her instinct, she holds their hand.

-I'm thinking...are you sure? I mean, it will be pretty dangerous outta there. And you still don't know well how to use your Power...I don't wanna you to get hurt!- Marcy bursts out in the end, hugging Anne. They snuggle against Anne's chest, searching comfort. The curly haired girl is taken by surprise but she hugs her best friend back.

-Marcy, you're so cute when you're worried.- Anne says, talking low. She feels so wrong, so fake. Trying to not think how Sasha made exactly the same move that morning, she cups Marcy's face in her hands.

-I won't get hurt, I promise you. Do you trust me, Mar Mar?- She asks with a smile. Marcy doesn't realise how tense she is and nods.

-I trust you, Anne.- Anne lets them go and makes a step behind.

-I'll go check if everything is alright...- She invents an excuse and Marcy furrows, noticing how she's playing with the strands of her hoodie.

-Anne, are you okay?- They ask, worried, but Anne avoids their eyes and nods, curt.

-I'm perfectly fine, Mar Mar! See you later...- She murmurs, sneaking inside the crowd of frogs and toads. She feels a heavy rock on her stomach that's dragging her low. Why everything has to be so complicated? Anne curses in a low voice, drying off the tears before they can exit her eyes. She feels all the pressure of the situation.

She lows her gaze on her hands and for a second a blue sparkle jumps from finger to finger. Anne closes her hands in fists. There's no time anymore to cry or complain. She's about to save Wartwood and kill a huge monster.
