It was a long drive, but within an hour and a half, we arrived in Nantes, France, where Francis told me he was living. He also explained that he would go back to the port town nearly daily to ensure I had arrived. For someone who seemed annoyed with my existence, he seemed caring when it came to my safety.
Wait a minute...I don't have papers! What will I do if someone stops me?
I looked out into the city and saw the Nazi flags everywhere, and I began to get scared. "Wait, I don't think this will be a good idea," I spoke, worried. Francis looked at me; it was like he could sense how worried I was. "Don't worry, when we get to my place, I will get you a change of clothes so we can get you out of those ridiculous-looking ones..." he snickered. "Hey! I am from the future!"
"Yeah, that doesn't make me any less worried. All I have gotten from that is the future has terrible fashion taste."
"Hey! It is not like I should wear a suit and tie while traveling through time! All my clothes have been picked out specifically to help my body deal with the effects!" I pointed out. I crossed my arms and could still hear him laughing at me. "Like how? Looking like garbage is not a good fashion statement," he giggled. I felt my face turning red, and I glared at him. "Neither is being a douchebag, yet here we are!" I spat. He continued to laugh at me as he slowly stopped the car.
"Here we are! Let's hurry inside before anyone sees us," he spoke. I nodded at what he said, and he turned to me, smiling. I nodded at him in response, but we only stared at each other. "We should get out," I laughed. His eyes widened, and he began to nod his head. "Yes! lets!"
We both began to get out of the car, and he pulled me inside his home quickly and quietly. "Just excuse the mess, I did not think I would be seeing you anytime soon, so obviously, I did not have time to clean," he spoke. I looked around his home as I entered, and I could not help but smile.
His place was charming and had many old touches lost in history: the decorations, the style, and the clothes. When I made my invention, I only wanted good to come from it, but I was scared deep down that I may have caused something terrible. "Make yourself at home," He spoke. I could hear him close the door behind him, and I took the chance to look at everything.
"I am assuming you live alone, no wife?" I asked.
"You assumed correctly. It would be troublesome to date, so I choose to be alone..." he spoke. His voice sounded sad, and I understood why. "Maybe one day, you will find the answer to your condition," I spoke. "Ah, you said you saw me way into your future, so I doubt it will be anytime soon; I think I should get comfortable while I figure everything out," he spoke. I nodded at what he said and began to look at the pictures he had up.
There were some of him, some of other people, some of animals...and then...
"What is this?" I asked. I began to reach for the old photo of me; it was the one he had taken of me. "Don't you have manners! Don't go touching my things!" he spoke in defense. I looked at him, shocked, and glared. "Why do you still have that picture of me? It has to be forty years old by now," I spoke. "Huh?! How about you mind your business!" he spoke. I lifted a brow at him and shook my head. "Yeah, whatever...where are the tools?" I asked.
"Nope! You will get changed first before doing anything!" he demanded.
"What? I do not have time to humor you right now; I must get back," I spoke. He shook his head and began pulling me into another room. "Look, I know you just got here and are eager to leave again, but you look like crap! Take a shower, change, and EAT! Do anything else but work right now!" He began to lecture me as he suddenly handed me a towel.
"What?"
"Did I stutter? You will take a shower, change and eat first. Hopefully, consider taking a nap; you look exhausted!" he spoke. He began shoving me toward the bathroom, and I tried to stop him. "Please! that is one of my conditions for using my stuff! Shower! Now!" he demanded once more. God! He acted as if he cared about me so much when he was rude earlier.
"I will make food for you, so do not take so long," he spoke. He finally shoved me into the bathroom, shutting the door behind me. I looked back at the door, then to the mirror in front of me, and saw how exhausted I looked. Then, I looked at the open window above the shower head.
Part of me wanted to escape because I knew I did not have much time...but I knew I would not survive here without his help. "I hate him..." I breathed out quietly.
I removed my bag and placed it gently on one of the chairs. I was going to keep my eye on these things. I placed my watch down on top and removed my clothes to use them to cover my stuff. I knew no one would come here and still my stuff, but I was worried. "Arthur! Don't take long!" Francis called from outside the door. "ALRIGHT! I GET IT..."I called back, annoyed. I shook my head at his demand and began taking off my clothes. I suppose it would not hurt to take a break from everything around me. When I left my time, it was nighttime, and I could not tell how much longer it had been. I am probably running on a few more hours of sleep. It would not hurt.
