- Higher Ground
"The English attacked at Dawn, took almost everything we had but we beat them back" A French royal guard informed Francis as the two rode into the camp where multiple of soldiers are rather dead or greatly injured, " between the constant attacks and desertions, we won't be able to hold the line" Francis glanced around his surroundings before turning his attention to three alive soldiers and curiously questioned, " where is your commander?"
"Dead. Who's asking?" the soldier asked in response looking up at Francis with furrowed brows but before Francis could reply the French royal guard spoke up and demanded the three soldiers, " The Dauphin of France. Stand when you address him" The three soldiers eyes widened in surprise as they immediately stood up from where they were knelt near the fire.
Francis looked between the three of the French soldiers with a scowl on his face and informed, " The English have been on our soil in Calais for two centuries. I, for one, am tired of seeing them attack our lines. I'm sure you are too. That's why you're not gonna hold this outpost anymore. You're going to advance" one of the soldiers frowned with an confused and worried expression on his face as he looked at his men before turning his attention to the Dauphin of France and exclaimed, " but we've lost half of our company"
"The English know that." Francis replied with a shake of his as he held a determined look on his face and continued speaking, "That's why they keep attacking, taking a few of us each time until we can't fight anymore and are forced to retreat. We're in danger of losing this war if we don't act. The soldiers you repelled come from the castle of Montmorency. That castle stands between us and our route to Calais. If we take it, we clear the way. So the Duke of Guise can stop holding the English back on the eastern front and push his men through where the English aren't prepared to defend themselves. He has thousands of men"
The three soldiers shared a look of confusion before gesturing towards the rest of the remaining men that they had alive and pointed out, " but there's twelve of us. You want us to take a castle?" He questioned with a disbelief look on his face only for Francis to shake his head in response and corrected, " not you alone. All the men along the line will advance as well"
suddenly the sound of a horse trotting was heard when a messenger appeared to inform the Dauphin of France, " My Lord, Your Grace, the English have been spotted, headed this way" the French royal guard eyes widened in realization as he turned to face Francis with an alerted expression on his face and called out, " we need to get you to safety" one of the soldiers scoffed narrowing his eyes at the future king of France and sarcastically commented, " so much for advancing to a bloody castle"
Francis stayed silent for a moment before turning to face the messenger and firmly told him, " Send word to the Duke. Tell him to get here as soon as he can" The French guard shook his head frantically with an frustrated look on his face as he warned Francis, " Your Grace, you can't stay. If the English see you on horseback. If they even recognize you as a noble, they'll take you out first" The Dauphin of France climbed off his horse ripping off his French cloak taking a couple of steps forward towards the soldiers and stated, " meet your new commander. We're advancing to a bloody castle"
