Chapter 3: Soulmate Class

Start from the beginning

No one raised their hands. Whether students were too cynical to even entertain that thought or just didn't want to admit to the possibility, it didn't matter. It was exactly the kind of response Professor Park expected as he nodded in acknowledgment and continued.

"Think about it. I know almost all of you are just here because this is a graduation requirement, but perhaps the world is smaller than you think. Out of the eight billion people within it, maybe just maybe your soulmate can be among the 100 or so people sitting in this lecture hall right now. I leave you with that as I continue on to our actual topic of discussion.

"Now, how many of you wear your bracelet on a consistent basis? By this I'm talking almost every day, forgetting about only two or three times a month if that."

About 10% of the class raised their hands. A little less than expected, but Professor Park just gave another nod. A bracelet wearer was most prominently proud, but most were also humble, so it made sense.

Professor Park then continued on with his lecture, clicking the right arrow key on his keyboard to go to the next slide. "So, what do bracelets have? Two things usually, but can be represented by more than two charms. First, is a representative animal. I'll talk more about that later on. Second, something regarding your soulmate's interests. That's pretty straightforward, say, for example, your soulmate has an interest in sports, then perhaps it's a football or basketball or whatever sport they play, if they have interests in art or music, perhaps an instrument or paintbrush, something like that. At the end of class, I'll show you a drawing of a soulmate bracelet that belongs to someone in this class to give a better visual. Any questions on the two parts of bracelets?"

A student sitting in one of the middle rows raised their hand. Professor Park regarded them.

"How do you know your students' bracelets?" they asked.

"Ah, well, my specialty is working with and researching soulmates. Also, most of this kind of information is on public record, and if you read the syllabus carefully, you should know that when you signed it, you consented to certain information regarding soulmates being shared."

He saw the student nod in understanding so he looked around to see any more questions. Seeing none, he moved on. "Now, qualities of the bracelet itself. A few things, it helps with more specific identification, since your quote tells something about your relationship with your soulmate, the bracelet tells something about the soulmate themselves, this has not been fully tested as of now, but many people report that wearing it can help them feel closer to their soulmate, and for those who have intense connections, it can help relieve some of the pain that can potentially come with that. And before you ask, that's for another lecture."

He paused to see if anyone had other questions but it seemed everyone got this part. So, he checked the time to see how much he had left. 10:15, about half an hour left, that was good, he had time to get through the most important parts.

"Okay, now finally talking about animals. Predator versus prey classification. The different pairings that go with that, and how that might affect certain soulmates. Within a particular soulmate pairing, if your animal is a predator, you're also most likely a start quote and you tend to be more outgoing, but that's not all cases, same with prey, just the opposite, you guys are most likely to be an end quote and be more reserved, but again, not always the case. In some cases, you can have someone whose animal is a lion but they're an end quote and very reserved. Or, perhaps a rabbit who's an extremely outgoing start quote. Some common predators include, well, lions, tigers, sharks, whales, wolves, snakes, and certain birds like hawks and eagles. Some examples of prey animals are rabbits, deer, frogs, smaller fish like bettas, goldfish, and the like.

"The three kinds of pairings exist, predator x predator, prey x prey, and predator x prey. The last is by far the most dangerous type, but, it's increasingly becoming a more common pairing. The first type is kind of intimidating, when you see them together it can be quite scary, but they're actually usually really kind of sweet, this type of pairing can be commonly seen as the protector type. The second type tends to keep to themselves, but are also very welcoming people, their auras are far less intimidating than the first type. As I said, the last is the most dangerous, there's a certain intensity that exists with this type. I mentioned this earlier, but the pain associated with strong connections is usually with this type of pairing. The classic example of opposites attract, push and pull. This pairing is difficult, but it can still work well if given a certain effort, but then again, that's with all relationships, so don't take this as an end all be all. Some of the best soulmates I've met are the last type. And just as an end note, all of these types can work out if there's enough care put into them."

Professor Park looked at the clock, five minutes left. "Okay guys, that's all I have today, but before we go, I did say I was going to show a drawing, so here it is." He turned off the projector and lifted the screen. On the board was a fairly decently drawn bracelet depicting a penguin, dancing shoes, and a stethoscope. "If this is yours you can choose to identify yourself or not."

"Yeah. Excuse me, professor, that's mine," someone from the back said, raising their hand.

Is that... Mina thought. Oh shit.
