Warnings: Language, Violence
Chapter 5:
402 Years After the Virus; Month 8; Day 19They had arrived early. I froze and I felt Sabre tense. He pulled me over to the window and I looked out. There were two black armored vehicles parked in the square while several Officers, including Weir and Connor stood with large guns as people filed on by, acting like scared sheep.
"We need to get out," Sabre whispered, "I can't say what will happen if they find out who you are." I turned quickly, feeling anxiety bubble up.
"What the hell are you talking about?!"
"Jamie was supposed to keep you safe and he's also the decoy. As far as we know Weir and Connor think you're dead, so they are going to send people in after Jamie after we've evacuated."
"Are they going to kill him or keep him alive?" I asked, my voice tight.
"Well, they'll probably shoot him in the head and expect him to live." I grabbed a hold of his shirt.
"You're going to tell me what's going on?! Right now!"
"I don't know the details and telling you right now will not help us in the least."
"Sabre!" Rinnick called, "We need to go." We turned to see Annette hurrying the twins out the main doorway that would lead them down the steps outside. Rinnick was standing there waiting.
"Okay," Sabre said and then repeated the word in a quieter voice. "Just walk beside me, Alloy. Don't look at Weir or Connor, whichever one we pass by. They are the only ones who know, so they are the only ones who will create a problem. Once we're past them, I'll look for an escape."
"Why not evacuate with everyone?" I asked.
"Because it's not safe for you to be anywhere near the governments grasp."
He took my arm and pulled me along. We followed behind Rinnick and Annette who filed in behind other people. Sabre stood on my left, shielding me from the vehicles and the officers in the black uniforms. Then, when Weir was coming up, Sabre lightly pushed me up by Rinnick, who had more bulk to hide me. I kept my eyes faced straight ahead and took several deep breaths. I couldn't tell whether or not we'd passed Weir, but then I heard Connor's voice, telling Weir to grab her.
Sabre took my arm as people turned, including Rinnick and Annette. Conner made his way forward, pushing the stunned Weir out of the way. I slid behind Sabre as he stepped in front of me. Conner was on the leaner side, but I knew he had Officer training and Sabre did not, if it came to a fight.
"Step out here," Connor said, gesturing us to move out from the stream of people. Sabre stepped forward and I held onto his shirt so I didn't loose him. Seeing Connor's face had brought it all back and I suddenly felt like I was going to be sick.
"Haven't you done enough?" Sabre asked in a growl, "Terrified her."
"Weir said he shot her in the forehead," Connor stated, "I want to see her." Sabre wasn't going to let me move, but I needed to face Connor as well. I wasn't going to back down and show him my fear. So, I stepped out from behind Sabre and Connor's eyes narrowed. Weir was standing a little ways away, his lips parted and his eyes darting around.
"You look perfectly fine, healthy," Connor said and reached out to grab my face, but Sabre grabbed his wrist. Sabre and Connor were about the same height, so I was sure Connor wasn't going to try anything.
"Don't touch her," he hissed. Connor's dark eyes flashed dangerously, but he turned to Weir.
"How does a girl with a bullet to the brain get up and walk around, Weir?" he asked.
