Hamdan
I stepped into the room with my sisters by my side.
Mama had been brought to the party headquarters, and was currently sitting at her desk in her office, staring blankly towards the window. She looked okay, apart from a plaster on her forehead.
The bullet had hit the tyre of her car, causing the driver to swerve after being startled. Mama had hit her head when the car had crashed against a parked rickshaw. The rickshaw driver had not been inside, and Mama's driver was also basically okay.
"Mama. Are you okay?" I asked, softly.
She looked up and saw the three of standing in front of her desk. "What are you three doing here?"
"We heard about the assassination attempt and we came to see you, to make sure that you're okay." Appi replied.
"I'm okay. Alhumdulillah." Mama glanced at each of us in turn. "I have some work to do, so you three may leave."
I exchanged a look with my sister, then I nodded my head at Sabeen, who closed the door and locked it.
"What is the meaning of this?" Mama looked irritated.
"If you want, you can call the guards who can break the door down and throw the three of us out." I shrugged.
She lifted the intercom as if to do exactly that, but then she raised her eyebrow at us, setting the phone back down again. "What do you want?"
"We just want to talk." I walked towards her.
She exhaled and sat back in her seat.
"Look, you don't have to leave the house, okay? All we want is for you to give up the immoral path, that's all." I said. "No corruption, no illegality. Be a rare politician, an honest one."
"Is this meant to be an intervention?" Mama asked. "Are you serious, Hamdan?"
"Mama, this is for your own good." Appi added.
"Get out of my office, all three of you." She said, quietly.
"Mama..." Sabeen stepped towards her.
"GET OUT!" Mama shouted in a way that she'd never done before, certainly not at us. "Just get out of here, and stay away! I don't need any of you! You want to be left alone to live your own lives? Go ahead. You got your wishes. I will no longer have any involvement in your lives."
"Mama..."
"You no longer have any obligations towards my party. The party members will vote for who the next leader will be once I step down, or if I'm successfully assassinated, whichever event happens first." Mama looked straight at me.
But I didn't give up. I walked over to her and placed my hands on her shoulders. "Mama, we are your family and we love you. We just don't want you to do things that leave no room for redemption. We want you in our lives, but we don't want you to involve yourself in corruption or haram things anymore. Give up, and come back to us." I hugged her. "God, if anything had happened to you today..."
I felt her sag against me, as if surrendering. "Hamdan..."
"Mama, please."
She pushed me away. "You have five seconds before I call the guards to kick you all out. Leave with your own will before that."
"Bhai, let's go." Sabeen said. "She doesn't want to listen."
"You could have been killed today, Mama." I grabbed my mother's hands. "A close call with death usually puts the fear of God in people. It's a good opportunity for you to realise what's important in life and what's irrelevant." For a tiny second I felt like I'd gotten through to her.
