As the interns shuffled out of street clothes and into scrubs, the air in the locker room hung heavy with the scent of Irish Spring soap and the rhythmic slap of damp towels against tiled walls. The room now buzzed with the tense anticipation of another demanding day at Seattle Grace Hospital. Izzie was engrossed in a whispered discussion with George. Their conversation revolved around the possibility of moving into Meredith's house, a Victorian home with three extra bedrooms.
"What about you, Blake?" George's voice echoed off the metal lockers. "Aren't you still living in a hotel?"
Blake winced internally. Yes, the Travel Inn on 1st was a far cry from the apartment she'd envisioned for her first year as a surgical intern. But unlike most interns, fresh out of college and eager for companionship, Blake craved solitude. "We're together 24/7," she said deflecting the question, her voice carefully neutral. "Do you guys really think living together would be a good idea?" The question hung in the air.
"Yes," came the reply, a chorus of agreement from Izzie and George.
Blake rolled her eyes, a flicker of amusement momentarily chasing away the furrow in her brow. They just didn't get it. She wasn't built for the dorm-style living, the constant noise, the shared bathrooms. Ever since childhood, she'd yearned for a space of her own, a quiet haven to retreat to after the daily grind.
