death by a thousand cuts

Start from the beginning

"i-i need you to come pick me up," you said.

"from where?" he asked.

"my house," you replied, "devin had an outburst and i just need to get out of here."

"your brother? that's unlike him," steve commented.

"extremely," you agreed, "he's been acting very odd ever since last night."

"was he out with heather?" steve asked.

"yes, he was," you said.

"she's been acting weird too," steve said. "and she's been hanging out with...."

"billy..." dustin and steve said at the same time. they must have realized that the return of the mind flayer was linked to billy, heather, and now your brother, devin.

"give me five minutes and i'll be over there," steve said, "stay put for now."

"thank you," you said.

"and (y/n)?" steve said.

"yes?" you replied.

"you're going to stay at my house for a few days," he said.

"why?" you asked.

"just trust me," he replied. "pack a bag or something and i'll be right there."

you hung up and steve looked at dustin who was crossing his arms in the kitchen.

"you are such a simp," dustin said.

"i am not," steve rolled his eyes.

"but you are in love with (y/n) (y/l/n)," dustin smirked.

"and?" steve crossed his arms now. "she would never think of me like that. she's my best friend's sister."

"she's out of your league, i'll give you that. but she looks at you like she's in love with you too." dustin sighed.

"as if," steve rolled his eyes again.

"oh c'mon steve," dustin sighed, "just admit your feelings for her."

"why?" steve sighed, grabbing his keys.

"you're hopeless," dustin said, walking out the door.

not too much longer later, steve pulled up in front of your house and you walked out of the door. he stopped breathing for a moment because you were just that stunning. hair in loose waves around your face, a bag slung over your shoulder, shorts and an old band tee that was probably devin's. your eyes met his and you smiled, tears still in your eyes. dustin smiled when he saw you.

"get in the back," steve said to dustin once he'd regained himself.

"excuse me?" dustin raised an eyebrow.

"go," steve stated.

"admit your feelings," dustin said as you neared.

"deal," steve shook on it and dustin hopped into the backseat as you opened the passenger door.

"you look pretty," steve said.

"pretty upset," dustin added on.

steve shot him a look as you put your bag in front of you and closed the passenger door. steve began to drive off toward's his house as the sun set in the distance.

"dustin do you need me to take you home?" steve asked him at a stoplight.

"actually, can i spend the night at your place?" he asked, "this mind flayer thing's really got me spooked."

"well (y/n)'s already staying over and-" steve began.

"steve," you said, "the company is good right now."
