My name is Shija. I am from sector 1134b part of the OKA agricultural cluster, located on earth, an area formerly called Tanzania .I have been 20man-years for 50 earth years now, we normally write this down as 20-50e, for simplicity. what it means is, at 20 years was when I started my 'telo-therapy', more on that later
It is the year 2250, it is a great time to be alive (maybe). I have read the records from my grandfather's archives; diseases and old age are a thing that died with him.
I read that by 2059 the number of people who wore spectacles due to eye damage from computer screens (outdated ocular technology, wasteful and dangerous) was almost 40% worldwide. The prevalence now is almost 1% and almost all of them wear for cosmetic reasons, nostalgia of some sorts.
My dad is one of those, he says old age was a prestige back in grandpa's era, a mark of accomplishment or experience. This is the reason Dad was not receptive to the telomere replenishing therapy even when everyone was using it. He is among the physically oldest in our sector. He would have let himself grow old and stiff if mom hadn't let him take the drug. He has been 62man-years for 180 years now(60-180e). Dad's generation is one of those so called 'new people'. They signify a time of cognitive revolution only paralleled with that of 16th century science.
I have read about it. New technology every day, feats from what was fiction at the time, Business went all time high, some businesses formed sectors and named themselves government, it was legal especially if the sector was extra planetary. It is important to mention that extra planetary here is in reference to earth. All this started after a certain rich guy from 21 century managed to make extra planetary travel and settlement economically feasible. It was a wildfire, everyone was leaving, most of them permanently. There was talk of new energy sources, solution to global warming and overcrowding, newer jobs... For a moment even birth policies were slackened here on earth.
My grandfather Mino, an absolute legend in our cluster, and his contemporaries are the people who are responsible for what we are today, they are the ones that remained. While everyone's eyes were staring up, his peers went down and deep. Into the human molecules.
Most of my body is artificial, and upgradable. My Dad and many of his peers are what we call the organics, it means they have more than 80 of their bodies unaltered. It is expensive and risky to live such a life. Natural body requires certain constant treatments and none of the cheap stuff either, otherwise your nose could drop off or something. Also there is constant fear of being attacked by harvesters. I have several friends who would rip the eyes off my dad if he wasn't as feared as he is. Eyes go for 4300 int.dollar at the moment. In context, that could buy you a house. I still have my original organs, they are preserved in in an organ bank, it is safer and a wise investment, eyes were 3000 int.dollar four years ago.
At the moment I am 60% synthetic. My body is one of the reasons dad and I don't live in the same roof, to quote him, he 'never raised a godamn punk'. what can I say Oldman, welcome to our time.
