The Court of Owls is a myth, a scary story that parents tell their children to keep them in line and keep them out of trouble. Being a Gothamite, it doesn't surprise you that there's a secret society that tries to run everything the city does. That was the Mafia before The Riddler brought it to light last year. Kara's face pales as she waits for your explanation. "What do you mean what did Bruce do?" You ask as you pick up the figurine.
Kara looks at you incredulously, her nostril flared. "I've been out of the Gotham news loop for a year... I don't really know what is going on, but if it involves The Owls, we're as good as dead." She sits back in her seat, her fingers on her forehead. "Well, you're as good as dead. I don't know Bruce Wayne." Kara adds still frustrated.
You look around as everyone continues to talk and go about their business. "Can we talk more privately about this?"
Kara sucks her teeth, considering her options as Sabrina leans in, concerned. "Let's go to the restroom, but we have to be quick... You can't stay here." You pick up the figurine when you leave, tossing it in the nearest trash bin.
Sabrina checks every stall in the long bathroom and finds an out-of-order sign to place on the door before locking it. "You guys probably have five minutes before someone notices." She says, her brows low. You're glad she's here because you would have been talking faster and quieter in case someone comes in.
"Thank you, Sabrina," Kara says before you, tapping on the counter before turning to you. "So backstory for how I know about The Owls. My father got recruited for them when he went on that long business trip. I had inklings, but I didn't know until I turned 16 and he sent me an Owl figurine, a dagger, and a note. Essentially, he wanted to use me as his offering to the Owls. I would give them a vial of blood and they would train me to be a Talon and he would have a permanent spot. I didn't do it, in fact, I went to the police. They called me crazy and told me it wasn't real. So, I changed my name back to my mother's maiden name and I denounced him as my father. As far as the things he sent me, I buried them in our backyard. He figured out a different way to get a permanent spot when he found out I wouldn't do that. He used his patients at Arkham, well uses them. No one wants to be under his care because of the experiments and torture that he does for the Court. My mother is haunted by the fact that he joined the cult and that one day they could come for her once he's not useful..." She sighs, looking over at Sabrina.
"You're good Dr. del Mar. I don't hear anyone coming." Sabrina reassures before looking at you. You frown. You know about The Court of Owls, but they were just stories. They were not real. You rub your forehead as Kara continues. "I don't know what Bruce did because I've been busy doing everything to forget Gotham, so you're going to need to catch me up."
Your eyes bug out of your head as you think of all the things to catch her up on. "The most recent thing he's done that would probably warrant this is that he's trying to relaunch the Renewal and the Enterprises said no so he's trying to figure out what else to do... And I guess that they hate that, a lot." Kara takes in a deep breath, nodding as she grimaces. "Keep the status quo. I bet they prefer when he was aloof and alone..."
