Mariana's POV

"I'm fine Tommy" I insisted
"You're not fine" he said angrily
I stumbled into the kitchen, where mum sat, bobbing her knee and biting her nail
"Mar" she breathed out, her face falling into despair.

"What happened this time?" I asked, sitting down carefully
My back hurt, my face felt wet, and Tommy's hand had blood stained onto them after touching my head
So I could only assume I was bleeding. Badly.

"I... he came back drunk, he kept drinking... then he got angry because I... well he got paranoid again, started accusing me of the baby not being his" she explained, cradling her stomach.

It wasn't that big yet. Not as big as Tommy's mother was
I sighed
"I told you if he gets like that you need to leave" I said
"I know, I tried but he... he slapped me and then started shouting and then you came home" she said.

I nodded
"Are you alright? He hurt you too didn't he?" She asked, eyes watering
"I'm fine mum" I said
"You're not fine" she began to cry
She did this all the time, blamed herself when Kinney got so drunk he didn't even know his name, let alone who he was swinging his fists at.

"Look just, got to Pollys yeah? Get some sleep. David's away for the night and I'll come round in a little bit... okay?" I suggested
She nodded, unable to stop the tears rolling down her cheeks
She looked... distant. Out of it.

She does it a lot, spaces out, as if she doesn't know where she is or what's going on.

"Mum?" I urged, she looked at me, nodded once again and stood up
"Yeah I'll... I'll see you later darling" she said, pushing my hair back as she walked past, planting a small kiss on my forehead and leaving down the hall.

"Are you alright?" Tommy asked, grabbing my head again to look at it
"I'm alright I promise, I feel fine" I said
"You don't look fine" Arthur chimed, entering the kitchen
"Where's your dad?" I asked

He nodded to the living room
"Talking to Kinney" he said
"Come on, come next door, we'll patch you up" Arthur offered
"Arthur I'm fi-"
"We're not taking no for an answer" Tommy said, standing up and grabbing hold of my hand, pulling me along with him.

"You should have come and got one of us" he said, gently dabbing the blood from my face
I sat on Tommy's bed, hiding away from having to go to Polly's and deal with my mums hysteria.

"And leave my mum in there to get hit?" I said
He didn't get it. I know his mum and dad had their issues
I know his mum had... a lot of issues
