Their journey was short this time, for Mary Margaret knew exactly where to go and how to get there quickly. Time was of the essence, for they had to be able to get to the cell and find the squid ink before Cora discovered their whereabouts and took the compass from them. The cell was hidden underground, and when they got there, they lit up the tunnel paths with torches on the sides of the walls.
"Rumplestiltskin's cell," Mary Margaret said as Mulan and Aurora walked ahead, already beginning to check every crack and crevice in the rocks of the cell. "I haven't been here since before Regina's curse. This was where he told us you were going to be the savior."
"He knew?" Emma questioned.
"Oh, it was prophesized. Which of you, that he didn't know, but he knew it'd be one of my daughters" Mary Margaret said, making the girls exchange a look. "Come on."
As they entered the cell, Aurora said, "The squid ink, it's not here."
"Gold said we would find it," Mary Margaret said, a little bit concerned.
"Was there anyone else in here with him?" Mulan questioned, holding her torch up around her. "Could they have taken the ink?"
"No. He was kept alone. Visitors were forbidden. He was too dangerous to allow any human contact," Mary Margaret said.
(Y/n) let out a huff as she said, "He probably couldn't keep from losing his mind. How would he have?"
"He didn't," Aurora said, and they looked over to see her gazing at an old scroll in her hands.
"What is it?" Mary Margaret asked.
"Is it a message?" Emma joined, looking down at the scroll.
"Yes. And I think it's for the two of you," Aurora said, bringing the twins the scroll.
"Why would you think... that?" Emma started, but once she saw the top of the scroll she realized. (Y/n) took the bottom and unrolled the rest of it, the entire page filled to the brim with only three words.
Emma or (Y/n)?
The scroll reached down almost to the ground, the entire page only repeating this phrase over and over and over again. Rumplestiltskin really did lose his mind in this cell. "My, God," (Y/n) said as she looked over it. "That's very, very creepy."
Emma sat herself down on the ground with the compass on her knee as she looked over the scroll again. Her eyes darted over every single line, every single time Rumplestiltskin wrote her and her sister's names on this piece of worn paper. "What does this even mean?" she questioned as the other climbed around the cell, still looking for the ink.
"He was obsessed with you girls, Emma. You were the key to breaking the curse," Mary Margaret said as she climbed down.
"Well, only one of us was," (Y/n) muttered to herself, before clearing her throat and reaching through the rocks to find anything. Alas, she came up with nothing.
"We've looked everywhere. There's no ink in this cell," Aurora stated, standing up from her place near the ground.
"No, there has to be. He told David," Mary Margaret insisted, still searching.
"You were in a Netherworld. Maybe something got lost in translation," Emma said, keeping her eyes on the scroll.
"No. She heard right," Mulan said, and they all looked to her with expectant excitement.
"You found it?" (Y/n) asked, the others rushing towards Mulan's side as she held an ink bottle in her hand.
"In a manner of speaking. There was ink in this cell," Mulan said wearily, tipping over the bottle to show it empty.
