The array of emotions you felt when Sunwoo told you about Minjee and the conversation he overheard were nothing compared to the ones that hit you when Sunwoo's words sank into your brain. You're not even sure which emotion to cling to as they swirl wildly throughout your body.
Sadness is the predominant emotion, and it hits you harder than you expect. You knew that this arrangement wasn't permanent, but you never even thought about Sunwoo moving out. You never considered how you'd feel when it happened. Then again… you never considered the possibility of falling for him either. The old you, the one who agreed to let him temporarily stay, would probably be doing jumping jacks right now. The present you… not so much.
Mixed in with that sadness is worry. Worry about how your relationship will change when you’re no longer forced to be in the same space. Will you still see Sunwoo often, or will he ghost you just like he did with all of those other girls? You have to believe that the friendship you’ve built means more to him than a one night stand does, but that doesn’t mean the slight anxiety and nervousness you feel aren’t still right there telling you otherwise.
When you realize Sunwoo is waiting for you to say something, you push a weak smile onto your face. You are happy for him. You're sure it'll be nice for him to have his own space and not feel like he's constantly invading yours, so you’ll put on a happy face for him. That doesn't mean you're not bummed out, though.
"That's great, Sunwoo. I'm happy for you."
His eyes search yours for a moment. You wish you could see whatever it is he can as he takes in the forced happy expression on your features. Are your feelings clear on your face, or are you better at hiding them than you realize?
"What's your favorite dessert?" He suddenly asks, eyes narrowing in focus.
Thrown off by the random question, you open your mouth to respond but then shut it in confusion. Sunwoo takes in your furrowed brow and questioning gaze. The corner of his lips tilt up in amusement.
"If you could have any dessert in the world right now, what would you want?"
"I - why?"
He nibbles on his bottom lip before saying, "Because I want to take you out."
Air rushes into your lungs as you inhale in surprise. Your heart slams against your ribcage as his words turn over in your head, and you can feel your eyes widen, but almost like he can see where your thoughts are heading, he adds, "I want to treat you for letting me stay here."
It feels like the floor beneath you has disappeared with the way your stomach drops. His clarification might as well be in neon letters. He saw you processing his words and realized you thought he was asking you out and quickly amended them. Of course. What else did you expect? You know he doesn't feel the same. Hell, now he's probably going to use it as an opportunity to softly drop an "I'm not interested" while he's at it.
"Sunwoo, you really don't have to do that."
"Please?" He softly asks. "Let me do something for you."
A pout begins to form on his face, and you quickly - and annoyingly - realize that there's no way you can turn down the cute expression. Add it to the list of growing weaknesses you have for him.
"I'm not really picky about desserts," you admit, allowing him a chance to treat you.
A smile quickly grows on his face. "Perfect! I found a really nice looking dessert shop a few blocks away. Are you okay to go now?"
A small disbelieving laugh escapes you. You certainly didn't think he meant now when he asked. "For breakfast?"
"What better way to wake up?" He gives you an answering grin.
