A moon had passed since Moonkit was made an apprentice with his mentor waking him before the dawn patrol had even gone out.
At least I will be the best apprentice out of 5", He mumbled to himself as the two, apprentice and mentor, padded out of camp.
The wind had a slight tang of shrew so as careful as he could he made his way over to a dried river where the shrew was scrabbling at a root. Leaning into the hunter's crouch he stalking it a bit further before leaping out, claws unsheathed. He missed it by a tail length and it scurried into it's burrow deep underground.
"WHAT WAS THAT!", Sparkpelt yowled aiming a blow for Moonpaw's ear, but the apprentice dodged it as he knew it was coming. His mentor went stumbling before landing on his side. "A bit of a smartcat, ey? Well see about that!", Sparkpelt lunged at Moonpaw but again the apprentice moved out the way again. Somehow he knew what was coming because he whipped around and his paw flashed out and he hit Sparkpelt's eye with his claws out. "ARGGGGHHHHHH!", He skreiched writhing on the ground in pain.
A loud rustle came from the bushes behind them and the dawn patrol bounding out.
"Sparkpelt! Are you okay?!", Hollypelt asked trying to pull his paw away from is eye so she could see.
"I WILL MURDER THAT APPRENTICE!", He yowled pulling himself up. Moonpaw backed up against a tree before running towards camp. His heart pounding in his chest he ran right into Morningpaw.
"SORRY!", He mewed helping her up.
"It's all good", She chirped. "Why are you running? Was there a badger? FOX?".
"N- No I- I scratched Sparkpelt's eye!". A purr of amusement rose from Morningpaw.
"He deserved it", She said laying her tail on his back.
"I don't know..", Moonpaw began, "He's my mentor and I'll still have to go back to him and he'll just hurt me more". Morningpaw brushed her pelt against his.
"Walk with me through the forest. It'll help you relax", She mewed and so they began padded through the big forest pine needles failing to hurt their paws.
----------------------------------------
"You will not do Hunting or Battle Training for 2 weeks due to what you have done".
"WHAT 2 WEEKS! SootStaR HE attacKed MEE!", Moonpaw protested nearly in tears. All the leader said was,
"Out".
Somewhere deep inside of the tom he knew that Sootstar had sympathy for him and he knew he could use it to his advantage.
"Sootstar I'm sorry I hurt my mentor but if I can't train I won't be the best warrior I can be and I want to be the best warrior in my clan.", He mewed innocently.
Yeah that's right, play the victim, make him feel guilty so that you can train again because you can't deal with the humiliation. A voice in his head sounded. This was his own thoughts. His own dark, dark thoughts. I can see. Use this to make your way to a warrior then deputy then, LEADER! Hahahahaha!
Moonpaw shook his head clearing his thoughts.
"Fine. Only because we need more warriors and it does sound good having you as the best warrior in the clan.", He replied eventually.
Yeah that's right LIE!
"Thanks Sootfur. But who's gonna train me, as Sparkpelt is in the medicine cat den being treated?", Moonpaw asked ignoring the voice.
"I will train you", The leader answered nodding to the apprentice.
"Really?!", He said with his jaw wide open.
Oh but you already knew didn't you? Yes you can hide your emotions well.
I can't do this. I can't train another apprentice! I am too old for this. But... It's only until Sparkpelt gets better.
"I- I have to go now", Moonpaw stuttered back stepping out of the leaders' den.
"Training starts TOMORROW!", Sootfur mewed as Moonpaw scurried away.
Thoughts flooded into the apprentice's mind but not any of his. Others.
Apprentices these days. Always running and using up their energy.
This mouse tastes old but not like I'd tell Shrewleaf that. Or anyone.
I wonder if I should tell him?
He then fell on a log and tumbled tail over head and stopped at Morningpaw's paws.
"Oh, uh Moonpaw, how- how are you?", The she-cat asked.
Keep it together Morningpaw! Her thoughts rang.
"Sorry", Moonpaw rushed before standing and pelting into the woods. She watched him as he ran further into Thunderclan territory her mind saying,
"Did I do something?".
A stab of empathy pricked his heart for leaving Morningpaw thinking she did something wrong.
What was wrong with him. What were these voices? Could he listen other cats thoughts?
He sat and listened to the calm surroundings. Trees danced in the wind and the brambles rustled as though something was inside. Being here was like laying on the ancient rocks that are close to the border with Riverclan after a long day of battle training.
That was until her heard it.
Cat. Cat. Kill cat. Tasty, tasty cat.
