I could feel my face tense in frustration as the young master pressed his handkerchief to the back of Chiyo's head. I was grateful she was alive, but I knew she was hiding how much it hurt for the young master's hands to be pressed on her wound. I noticed she wasn't looking at me and I lifted her chin slightly. She seemed to be looking at the edge of my shirt-sleeve, but not my eyes.
"She's not angry, Sebastian," Ciel said, "She can't see well. She hit her head too hard."
If that didn't make my anger boil over, I don't know what would. Between the threat to my young master, the pain that was caused to this maybe-human that I had become so attached to, and how late it was getting, I was ready for this to end.
"I suppose I can't kill a reaper with just bare fists alone," I said, gently removing my hand from Chiyo's chin, "Well then, I'll just try this. His very special reaper scythe."
I saw Chiyo's head perk. She was still listening. Good. She would know when he died by his exceedingly annoying and high-pitched screams.
"What are you doing? No, don't!" Grell cried as I kicked his face once more, knocking him to the ground and standing on his chest.
"This is much nicer. I much prefer kicking than being kicked. Master, he's revolting, but still a divine being. Are you prepared to accept whatever consequences come with killing him?"
"Sebastian, do you need me to repeat my order?" Ciel asked. I could tell he was ready for this troublesome creature to be gone.
I started up Grell's scythe, "We've finally found something you're good at, screaming. Good job."
"Wait, wait! I can tell you who killed the kid's parents!" Grell blurted.
The young master's interest was piqued.
I was interrupted by the tip of another scythe coming between me and Grell. I sighed and turned.
"I apologize for interrupting. My name is William T. Spears, an administrator at the grim reaper staffing association."
William read off the list of Grell's offenses, which was slightly entertaining, but I turned my focus to the young master and Chiyo. She was sitting on her knees on the ground while Ciel anxiously held his blood-soaked handkerchief against her head. She seemed tired, but reacted to my footsteps.
"You'll be alright. I'll make sure of it," I whispered to her. She nodded.
"Chiyo Kurenai, age 17, died from a cracked spinal cord and blood loss this night, three minutes from now," William said, "I suppose I will be waiting for a few more minutes to reap her soul and then I will drag this degenerate back. I apologize for all the trouble this retch has caused."
"Honestly, I never thought I'd see the day I bow my head to demon scum like you," he added softly.
His insult fell on deaf ears. Chiyo was going to die. I saw the shock on the young master's face. She had managed to dodge death for so long, avoiding so many tragedies. That reaper caused this to happen. She would've lived if not for him. I should've forced her to stay home. I wish the young master had ordered it be so.
"I should have forced her to stay home," Ciel said softly, "I never in my life thought we would be dealing with a reaper tonight."
How had I come to care for this human woman? I couldn't possibly love her, but still. Did I? I found my day to be the most pleasant when she was nearby, it was peaceful near her, even when she told off the servants, and even her strength tonight, standing in front of the master while she bled out to protect him when with that energy, she could've found help. It was a strange tug in my chest. Was it my failure that upset me? No, it was guilt. I could've prevented this and I didn't
