"Anyways. Class put away your phones. I understand that you are all annoyed with how long this is taking. And I gather you all know who your partners are. I would like to continue on with the project I am expecting you to complete by the end of the week."
Boos and shocked noises echoed around the room again, this time in response to what Mr. Yates said, not towards Chloe. This was the first time in weeks that these noises were not directed to her.
It felt great to not have the negative attention on her for once.
"I know, It is shocking to have the assignment due so early, but we do have a curriculum to follow and a set amount of things we need to learn in a semester. The end of the week marks the end of this unit. And I know I am the reason why we are so far behind, so I have a deal with you," Mr. Yates said, clapping his hands together, surveying the class.
Chloe couldn't help but look around the class as well. People actually seemed interested in this stupid class project and what the teacher had to say. This was so stupid, why do people actually care? What's the point of this assignment - or any assignment. Why do they have to have partners? Why does her partner have to be Dallon?
Chloe didn't dare ask any of these questions out loud. She didn't want people to laugh at her or ruin her anymore. It wasn't worth it.
"We won't be having class this week-"
Cheers and happiness chorused through the room, cutting off Mr. Yates.
"Hold on!" Mr. Yates demanded, "I wasn't finished. You will not be sitting here in class, because you will be performing your group project of reading to either elementary students or to residents in the local retirement home."
Groans mixed with some small cheers went through the room.
"Wow, you guys are really talkative today," Mr. Yakes commented, nodding his head slightly.
No response came from the classroom.
Mr. Yates continued, "I guess that means we will get started today. Talk with your partner and decide who you want to read to, and what you want to read. I would like you to spend at least two class periods reading to two different groups. Once you are all done reading your stories you will write a four-page paper explaining human interaction and how reading can improve people's lives."
Once again, groans echoed around the room.
"Ah, I won't be hearing any excuses. This is an easy assignment, go on. Get started." Mr. Yates said, going back to his desk and sitting down to mess around on his computer.
"Alright, so where do you want to read?" A low voice said from next to Chloe.
Chloe acted like she didn't hear it, and instead, she pulled her phone out of her oversized Kate Spade bag and started scrolling through it.
The rest of the students were in quiet conversations with their partners, some actually are leaving the room to go to the place they picked, probably to start reading. That means they already figured out what they wanted to read as well.
Over-achievers.
Why do they want to get started now? Mr. Yates just gave them a free class period to do whatever they wanted to do.
Maybe some people left just to leave and do that. Chloe knows that is all she wants to do. Just to leave this terrible place and go back home. Nothing sounds better than laying in her extremely fluffy and comfy bed watching hours on end of some stupid reality show; Real Housewives of any city or what the latest rich and famous family is.
Actually, there is one thing that would be better than complete and total solitude in her room. That is playing board games with her little brother, Caleb. The rare moments when it's just the two of them are Chloe's favorites. Sadly, they don't happen too often.
