Jack's pov.

Morning came too fast for my liking.

I enjoyed night time, surprisingly. It gave me a chance to think, to clear my head, to ignore my problems. I don't sleep much. I never did. But that didn't stop me from loving every second of the dark.

Not to mention, the palace was weird and hard to sleep in. It had no ceilings. Strange, I thought to make a palace without ceilings. But I didn't design it, so I supposed it didn't matter.

I spent most of the might pacing my room, shuffling things around to keep my ADHD brain from worrying. Normal late night stuff.

I shuffled out of bed (not that I had been asleep) and peeked my head out the door, the sun catching in my eyes from the sky. It was early morning. I could hear birds chirping.

The hallway was too shiny for my liking, just like everything was here. Tbe crystal walls reflected the sun, making everything too bright. I stepped out of my room and tiptoed down the hall, just in case anyone else was still asleep. I didn't want to wake them, no matter how much I wanted company.

I gently stepped down the stairs at the end of the hallway, looking around at the too fancy room it had opened up into.

Plush, white chairs sat in a circle, the sunlight streaming through the crystal walls on them. In the center was a huge glass coffee table, complete with flowers and aesthetic books on the top. Seated in the chairs were y/n, Conner, and Alex, who was sipping tea. They hadn't noticed me yet, and I wasn't sure if that was good or bad.

I could see their mouths moving but couldn't make out the words, so I quietly moved closer, trying to keep myself hidden.

Eavesdropping had always been a skill of mine. It was useful, living with my dad. Not that I enjoyed using it. I always felt guilty listening in when people didn't know I was there.

"--and it's not like we can send him home," Y/N was saying. I couldn't really make out her expression.

It was quiet for a moment, then Alex's crisp voice, too full of energy for so early in the morning, said, "Well, what are we supposed to do?"

Conner replied, "He can live with us--me. He can live with me."

I didn't really understand why the twins had had to split up, but I knew it had taken a toll on both of them. A dark feeling settled in my stomach, and I had the urge to give them both hugs. That would've looked weird, though, so I stayed where I was.

"He wouldn't want to leave his mom," Y/N whispered, her voice gentle and tired. "He loves her."

Who loves her? Who were they talking about? Curiosity rocked my body, nut I held my tongue, leaning forward.

"But we can't let him go back," Conner was saying. "He'll understand."

"Will he?" Alex countered. "People like that . . . well, they don't always know that what they're dealing with isn't normal."

Her tone alone made my blood freeze, and I decided I had had enough with the weird conversation.

"Hey," I said, louder than I needed to, as I walked around the corner. I sat in one of the chairs, next to Conner, who was staring at me.

"Hey," Y/N replied, not meeting my eyes. Alex played nervously with her blue, sparkly dress, and I raised am eyebrow.

"Everything okay?" I asked.

"Oh, yeah," Conner said, too fast, which only made me more suspicious. "Totally fine. Yup."

Y/N sighed and rolled her eyes. I noticed they were sitting closer than usual, and wondered what was going on. "Okay," I said slowly.

Alex said, "Today, we figure out how to get you guys home. Grandma's working on the potion to help."

I felt my face heat up. The into reason we couldn't to yone was because of me and my stupid father. "Cool," I said, and even to me my voice sounded hard.

Y/N sighed and gave me a reassuring look. "It's okay, Jack. None of us blame you."

Which only made me feel more embarrassed. "Still," I mumbled. "I blame myself."

"Self blame is one of the most dangerous things known to man," Alex said. "Read that in a book once."

Conner gave me an awkward shoulder pat. "It's okay, Jack."

I nodded, trying to believe him.

"Anyways," Alex saud, standing up. Her dress shined brighter when it caught the sunlight, and I squeezed my eyes. "We have to go."

"Go where?" y/N said, touching her head lightly. Whatever effect the dress had had on me must've been ten times worse for her head.

"To The Happily Ever After Assembly." She smiled, like she was handing us a present. "To decide what's going to happen to you!"

Super short and rushed and kinda unedited haha I did it during study hall and it's almost over as I'm writing this so yeah. Rushed lol.

Enjoy!
