"dad," josie sighed, nudging her father who laid asleep on the couch, empty beer bottles scattered on the table beside him. "dad!"

her father woke up, startled by his daughter's loud and hurried tone. "huh, what? what is it?"

"dad, are you getting up or do i have to call flo and tell her you're too hungover to work again today?" she asked the man.

he yawned and began to stretch, pulling himself up. "i'm up, i'm up." he began to rub his eyes as they adjusted to the light. "i need to shower. uh, can you get some eggs on the go, please?"

"sure," the girl said, making her way to the kitchen to began making breakfast for the two of them.

once they'd both eaten, they left the house together. "have a good day at school, j. don't get into trouble, study hard," hopper said, as they both walked to their respective vehicles.

"have fun dealing with old ladies' missing cats. see you later," josie remarked as she opened her car door and got inside. the two drove out of the driveway and began heading to their destinations, as they did every morning.

josie arrived at school around fifteen minutes later, pulled into the first available parking spot and grabbed her backpack from the passenger seat. she stepped out of her car, locked it and headed into the building, in search of her only friend - jonathan byers.

after a petty argument which resulted in the death of her friendship of ten years with steve harrington over the summer, josie became a loner. the only other loner in the school? jonathan byers. and so, the two befriended one another, and she had to say jonathan was actually pretty good company.

they had a few things in common, one of them being art. jonathan had an eye for photography, whereas josie had always been talented at drawing. they had similar music taste, even shared family issues.

jonathan's parents, joyce and lonnie, argued relentlessly for years, until they finally decided to split and his dad moved away. josie's dad and stepmom fought a lot too, after the death of her little sister, sara. they blamed each other for her death, even though it was neither of them's fault.

she couldn't see jonathan near his locker or in the library, she even checked the school's darkroom, but found nothing. she sighed as the bell rang and began to head to her first class of the day - physics.

josie hated physics.

she was actually quite good at physics, she was smart in general, however she was sat right in between her old friend, steve, and his new best friend tommy.

"good morning, josie," mr clarke smiled as she entered the classroom. though he mainly taught in the middle school, he taught this one physics class in the high school too, due to low staff.

"morning, mr clarke," she replied politely, before she took her seat and got her textbook out.

before long, steve and tommy h walked in, and all the girls attention immediately went to them. she could see what they saw in steve, she'd secretly been infatuated with him for years. there was no denying that he was one of, if not, the most attractive guy in school. but tommy?

"little josie hopper," tommy taunted as he walked behind her seat to get to his. he leaned over behind her so his face was near her ear and whispered, "how are you doing this morning, princess?"

"a lot worse now that you've shown up," josie said, rolling her eyes and turning her head away from him, but tommy didn't move from his position.

"tommy," steve warned, but his friend didn't budge. "dude!" he snapped.
