(Deena's pov)
Today when I woke up I was so excited to see Sam at school knowing that her dad would talk to her mother. A part of me was worried that he wouldn't be able to convince Sam's mom to let her go to school and that absolutely terrifies me.Now I just arrived at school and I see Kate and Simon walking towards the school building. I run towards them to catch up to them.
"Goodmorning, bitch!" Kate says and hugs me as soon as I'm close enough. "How's the project going with Sam?" She asks and winks at me.
"Oh my god! Kate!" I say unbelievable. "We're just friends!"
"Sure. Friends with benefits." Simon says while he and Kate laugh.
I roll my eyes and shrug the warm feeling in my chest off. "Where even is Sam? Have you seen her?" I ask still worried that her dad couldn't win the argument with Sam's mom.
"No. I'm sure she'll be here soon, Deena." Kate says.
I sigh and then I hear a voice behind me.
"Deena! Wait" I turn around immediately as I recognize Sam's voice. She comes running towards me with bruises and blood on her face and hugs me.
"Sam! What happened? Are you okay?" I ask as I pull away from the hug and look worried at her.
Sam looks around and pulls us behind the school building where no one can see us. Simon and Kate didn't realize Sam was here and just went into the schoolbuilding.
"Sam! What's wrong?" I ask again my hands caressing her cheeks trying not to press on the bruises too hard.
"I- my mom..." She trails off out of breath.
"Okay.. shh, it's okay." I try to calm her down. "Let's sit down." We sit down on a bench and when Sam calmed down she takes a deep breath before speaking.
"My dad tried to talk to her to get me to go to school, but no matter how hard he tried, my mom wouldn't agree." She explained, her breathing fast. "While they were arguing I tried to walk slowly to the door to sneak out but my mom came around the corner and saw me. She realized what I was trying to do and hit me. After my dad pushed my mom away from me she tried to hit him but I jumped on her to protect him. I fell and then my dad told me to run and let him handle it. He's still in there, Deena. We have to go back!" There were tears streaming down her face and her nose was bleeding. I took a tissue out of my bag and gave it to her.
"Sam, you can't go back there after what she's done to you." I say worried about what her mom would do now.
"But I also can't just leave my dad there." Her voice is shaking and I am thinking of what the best option is in this situation.
We turn our faces around to the parking lot when we hear a car stop. It was Sam's dad. As soon as her dad got out of the car Sam ran towards him crying and hugging him as soon as she was close enough.
