I woke up to see Bella on the phone. I didn't remember the trip, I only knew we were close to Phoenix. I saw the airport and heard Bella tell Jasper to turn. I rubbed my eyes, trying to wake myself up.
"I love you, Edward." Bella said, and I looked at her. Carlisle, I mouthed, and she nodded. "Is Carlisle with you?" Bella asked.
I heard a low voice on the other side and then Bella handed the phone to me. "Hey. Are you okay?" I asked, my voice still thick with sleep. "I'm okay, Addy. Don't worry about me. I'm so sorry that it came to this." He said, and I sighed. "I miss you." I said, and I heard him sigh also. "It's like you took half of me with you, Adelaide. I promise I'll do everything I can to make you safe again." He told me.
I teared up. "I know. I love you." I said, my voice breaking. "I love you too." He said, and I hung up. I handed the phone to Bella, who looked upset. I held her hand. "We're gonna be okay, Bells." I said, squeezing her hand. She smiled sadly. We reached the hotel and I walked numbly behind Alice and Jasper.
They checked us in and we went up to the room. The first thing that I did was go to the bathroom. I needed to collect myself. I didn't want Jasper feeling my emotions. I'm sure he didn't want to feel sad all day. I couldn't cheer myself up though, so I splashed my face with water and left.
Bella was asleep on the bed when I got out. I walked into the living to see Alice and Jasper on the couch. I sat down on the chair facing them. "Bella's asleep." I said, glancing at Alice. She nodded. "Addy, are you going to be okay?" She asked me, glancing at my face.
She could probably see where I had splashed water on it. "As long as no one gets hurt because of me." I said, looking down at my hands. I felt responsible for all of this. If I'd never came to Forks, everything would be fine. The Cullens would be okay. They wouldn't be worried about their safety.
"I'm not worth it." I said. "Yes, you are. Both of you are. You don't know what we've seen. Since Carlisle and Edward met you and Bella, they've been happier than we've ever seen them." Jasper said, shocking me. He hadn't really talked to me that much.
I nodded. "Thank you Jasper." I said, as a wave of calm spread over me. I leaned back into the chair and closed my eyes. All my life I had barely fit in, I was average. My grades were good, but not excellent, and I wasn't good at any sports in particular. I was liked, but not extremely popular. I felt like with the Cullens I finally belonged.
Which sounds crazy, since I was a human. A human surrounded by vampires. They were my family now, and I would do what I had to protect them. But what could a human possibly do to protect vampires? I had my lie detector skill, but it wasn't very helpful. Not at stopping a homicidal vampire. I felt so helpless.
I must have dozed off, because when I woke up it was daylight again. Did I sleep through the whole night? I wasn't in the chair anymore. I was in the bed, and Bella was gone. I sat up and walked into the living room, or whatever you called it in a hotel.
Alice and Jasper were still on the couch, and they were talking. But it was too low for me to hear. I saw Bella was on the phone in the corner. I walked over to her. "No, Mom, I'm fine." She said, and her voice sounded off to me. I glanced at her face.
She was crying. "Bells, what's wrong?" I asked her, and she shook her hand. I snatched the phone from her. "Hello? Mom?" I asked, and I heard a chuckle over the phone. "Adelaide, I wasn't expecting to hear from you." The man said. James, I remembered his name. "What do you want?" I whispered.
I hoped Alice and Jasper couldn't hear us, but they could possibly. "If you want to save your mother, come to your old ballet studio, and come alone. Or mommy dies." He said, and he hung up the phone. I had to save my mom, and I knew Bella felt the same.
We had an unspoken agreement, to get out of here. But with two vampires guarding you, it would be kind of hard. Just then the phone buzzed again, and I jumped. "Hello?" Bella said, answering it. "Edward, thank God." She said, and I sighed in relief.
I heard Edward's voice faintly, something about coming to get her. Bella nodded, and said, "okay, I love you." She said, and hung up the phone. She glanced at me and gestures towards the bathroom. I noticed Alice and Jasper had stopped talking and were looking at us.
I walked over and handed the phone to Alice. "Here you go." I said, and Alice grabbed it. She looked at me suspiciously. I went to the bathroom, and Bella was in there. I turned on the water and the shower. Maybe they would think we were taking a bath.
"How are we going to escape?" I said, still whispering. Bella sighed. "Edward's coming to get us. So Alice and Jasper should be checking out of the hotel soon, and we should just say we have to go to the bathroom, or something." She said. I nodded, though I knew the plan might not work. I heard a knock. "Hey, we have to check out." Alice's musical voice rang out.
"Coming." I said, abruptly turning off the water. We didn't have any bags, so we just asked behind Alice and Jasper to the desk. Alice was handing them a credit card. I nudged Bella. "Hey, um, Jasper, I kind of have to use the bathroom. Addy does too." She said, and I could tell she felt very awkward asking Jasper.
He glanced at Alice, and back at us. "Okay, but I'm going with you." He said. I tried to make my walk as casual as possible. When we reached the bathroom, Jasper stood outside the door. As soon as the door closed, Bella and I rushed to the other side, where the other exit door was.
We ran out into the parking lot, where we saw a taxi parked. We knew we had to hurry, because they were right behind us. I jumped in and Bella climbed in after me. "I'm on break." The man in the front seat said. I threw a wad of twenties at him. "Alright where you headed?" He asked cheerily, and Bella told him the address. The ride was depressing.
All I could think of was that I was going to die. James was going to kill us. There were a lot of things I stop had left to do. I wanted to graduate high school, and even go to prom. I still wanted to go to college. And get married. I wanted more time with Carlisle.
We'd only had one day together. A tragic day. I didn't even get to say goodbye to him. I guessed if I had to die to save our mom, it was worth it. She deserved to be happy with Phil. The car stopped and I took a deep breath. It was time. Were these my last minutes?
I looked over at Bella and pulled her into a quick hug. "I love you." I told her and she smiled. "I love you too." She said. I grabbed her hand and we went inside the ballet studio. I love you, I thought, and I wished that Carlisle could hear me.
