(Sam's pov)
"Sam!" I hear my dad yell from downstairs. "It's time for your audition!" I close my book and run downstairs as fast as I can but try to look not too excited so my mom won't suspect anything."Goodluck, honey!" My mom yells before I walk out the door and I mutter a bye back.
I get into the car with my dad and we drive to school. "Thank you for being such an amazing dad." I say and it makes him smile.
When we arrive at school my dad walks with me to the gym hall where the audition will be. The moment I walk into the gymhall Deena runs to me and hugs me. I feel this familiar warmth in my stomach as I hug Deena back tightly.
"Did your mom really take you home because we were in the same class?" Deena asked.
"Yeah." I sighed. "She always picks me up and makes up an excuse to the principal when things don't go her way." I say as I pull away from her hug.
"Sam, I'll pick you up at 6:00. Then you can still hang out with your friends for a while." My dad says as I turn to him.
"Thank you, but don't tell mom that Deena is here too, okay?" I answer with a smile.
"No, of course I won't." He chuckles and gives me a fist and then a hug. "Good luck with your audition." He says.
"Thanks." I say with a smile. We pull away and he leaves to go home.
"Was that your dad?" Deena asks as I turn to her.
"Yeah." I say with a smile. "He's the best dad ever." I say and then Kate comes into the gym hall.
"Oh, hey Sam!" She says. "You're here to audition, right?" She asks as she walks over to me.
"Yep." I answer with a huge smile on my face.
I'm so happy that my dad allowed me to hang out with Deena after the audition.

The audition is done and Deena pulls over at her house. When we come into her house Deena takes the pizza her dad has ordered and we eat it in her room.
"What excuse did your mom even use?" Deena asks.
"I don't know and I honestly don't even want to know." I say. "Probably that someone in my family died. She once said that my dad died and I believed it too. So I cried so much until she suddenly said it wasn't true and I was so angry at her I swear to god."
"Wow." Deena says. "Your mom is literally the worst."
"I know." I sigh. "I'm glad that my dad is amazing though." I say.
"Yeah, your dad is so nice!" Deena says.
"So, what did you do at school?" I ask hoping I didn't miss something fun.
"Not much." She sighs. "Just followed the lessons to be honest. School is so boring without you." My heart skips a beat after she said that.
"Really?" I ask. "Do you really think school is boring without me?" She nods and smiles at me.
"Wow." I say letting the compliment sink in. "But you have Kate and Simon right? So it can't be that boring."
"Yeah, I mean they're really fun but it's just different with you."
"A good different or a bad different?" I chuckle.
"You know it's a good different." Deena says and we both laugh.
"Shit!" I say as I realize that my dad was gonna pick me up at school.
"What is it?" Deena says as she looks worried at me.
"I need to call my dad to tell him that he has to pick me up here." I say.
"Oh, yeah sure! The phone is right there!" She says pointing at the phone on her nightstand.
I dial the number from my house and for a moment I'm worried for what I will say if my mom answers. Luckily it was my dad that answered the phone. "Hello?" He says. "Hy, dad. Uhm I'm at Deena's house so can you pick me up here? There's a paper on my nightstand with her adres written on it." I say. "Yeah, of course!" My dad says. "Are you having fun over there?" He asks me. "Yeah! We just ate pizza and talked a lot." I say with a smile and I feel that Deena is staring at me. "That's good to hear! I just found the paper with the adres, so I'll be there at 6:00." He says. "Okay, thank you! Bye!" I say happily. "Bye, Sam." He says and hangs up the phone.
After the call with my dad there was still an hour left so we talked a little bit more and watched friends on the tv since it was a new show that just came out. We laughed a lot at the show while we shared a bag of chips. I feel like I never knew what real friends are until Kate, Simon and Deena. And I'm glad I do now. All my friends in Sunnyvale stopped talking to me the second they heard that I was moving to Shadyside.
The doorbell rings and Deena's dad opens the door revealing my dad in the doorway.
"Already?" I say surprised that the time went so fast with Deena.
"Sorry, kiddo." He says as I stand up from the couch me and Deena were sitting on.
"See you tomorrow?" Deena asks before hugging me.
"I hope so." I sigh knowing that my mom will probably find a way to drag us apart.
"You will." My dad says which causes us to pull away from the hug and look at my dad. "Sam, I'll talk to your mother when we get home and I promise that you will see each other tomorrow at school." Those words make me and Deena smile widely and I hug my dad. "Thank you so much, mr. Fraser!" Deena says as he smiles and nods at Deena.
